I will provisionally accept your research re the 10k unaccompanied minors. That is a different situation and definitely requires accommodation and facilities for those kids. Perhaps a properly staffed and equipped tent city is a suitable short-term solution.

That said, it has absolutely nothing to do with separating young children from their parents after they cross the border as a family

The way slightly over two thirds of undocumented immigrants got here was through lawful admission. The wall won't solve the undocumented immigrant problem because they come through the ports of entry.

True security on our SLB will only be achieved by partnership with our neighbors to the south and encouraging transparent democracy, rule of law and economic prosperity. It's going to take time, patience and effort. Trump's inability to understand this has set our efforts on this front back years. National security is complicated and we are dealing with a president who isn't smart enough to understand any idea that won't easily fit on a bumper sticker.

IMO, in a few months the current situation will be considered the sunny uplands of the immigration debate. Camps for children will barely be a start.

I hope so. I can see that audio playing on a lot of political ads this summer and fall. This ploy to get Dems to bow to his legislative agenda needs to fail. Dems have to make it clear that Trump is the terrorist taking children hostage.

Don't take my word for it. I was trying to research what someone else was claiming. That poster may provide a citation but hasn't done so yet.

According to "Mary" the appointed spokesperson for the Christian Ayatollah who will only identify himself as John Barron, the list of demands include:

> A standing ovation.
> The cover of Time Magazine
> A Primetime Emmy
> Two scoops of ice cream
> A yuge wall
> Lots and lots of gold leaf
> A lifetime membership in Hairclub for Men

Going back to this comment (I was using my mobile), IMO it will get worse and worse as:

  • In the Texas summer heat, kids will start to get sick and possibly even die in the tent cities
  • It's noted that the kids have nothing to do all day. It'd be wrong to educate them on the state's dime but various evangelical organisations offer to go in and provide "education"
  • There is unrest in the tent cities as the older kids get angry and agitated and start to get violent. There will be video of heavy-handed guards going in and beating on little kids
  • There won't be enough volunteers to provide "education" so some bright spark will have the idea to teach the kids a "trade". The kids will end up doing whatever the modern-day equivalent of picking oakum is
  • There will be demonstrations against the treatment of the children but the scenes of violence in the camp will be used to show that they are little terrorists. They will need to be kept under lock and key because they present a real threat to the security of the US
  • The international community will vigorously protest this treatment of children. The Trump Administration will use this as an excuse to withdraw from more international treaties and obligations - perhaps even leaving the UN and kicking the UN out of their New York HQ

And the kicker ? One might assume that this will cause a "blue wave" in the Autumn, but the news will be so full of the "brown tide" coming from the southern border and fears of Hispanic terrorists and/or gangs that quite the opposite happens as GOP voters are now hyper-motivated to turn out and hundreds of thousands of legal Hispanic voters are purged from voter rolls in key GOP-controlled states.

This one would be a bit extreme, even for Trump. I mean, to leave an organization where you have a priviledged position is a bit stupid, even for him.

Hmm? A better question is "Why would you think that he cares about national security in the first place?" His actual actions show, quite clearly, that he doesn't. Rather, his actions show that his priorities are very much elsewhere.
