The Trump Presidency VII

I guess the USA is part of England because most of its population speaks English. Seriously, Trump is a buffoon.
And according to Trump the USA is also very corrupt. Let us know when we can expect you all back and I'll put the kettle on.

I'm not worked up about it. These are the kind of things the news media or partisans sometimes get obsessed over. That Trump tried to pretend that the summit was a monumental success is another. Trump got nothing and seemed to suggest the war games wouldn't continue. Kim never said anything he hasn't said before and nothing in writing was produced promising denuclearization.

Any salesman worth his salt knows there is no sale without paperwork.
You mean Kim and Trump's words aren't their bound? I'm shocked.

538's posted Trump's net approval rating changes between Jan 17 and May 18 according to their data. Down in all 50 states.

I don't put too much stock in these but it's interesting nonetheless.

That, of course, is because Stalin forcefully evicted the locals and forcefully relocated Russians there to replace them.

Doesn't count. That's all ancient prehistory. You know, way way back when, in our parents' time.

And anyway, they were all Nazi sympathizers. All quarter million or so of them. Women and children as well.

They deserved to be stripped of their homes, land, and possessions and deported to be slave labor thousands of miles away.

Picking up some nice, ready-made farmland for ethnic Russians to settle on a politically and strategically important territory of great historical significance was just a coincidental side effect.

Eh, Tesla is, as you say, venting a bit. Overall, his commentary is reasonable.

But I must say that it's one thing to refer to a single person as a turd and another to refer to a group of persons as animals. The latter seems more dehumanizing to me. In exactly the same way, Roseanne would have committed a greater offense had she referred to all (or a group) of African Americans as apes, rather than one. One is bad, but dehumanizing a group is more effective and hence more offensive.
<snip>

Roseanne used a slur specifically and traditionally known to be intended to dehumanize an entire group as her tool to dehumanize one.

So she rang both bells.

"When Kim Jong Un speaks, his people stand at attention, I want that here"

(exact words may be different)

I'd like to our resident toadies defend that statement.

The exact words were:

"He speaks and his people sit up in attention. I want my people to do the same."

I don't know which was worse from his discussion with Steve Doocy. The quote above, or Trump thinking it was funny that Kim had three generals murdered prior to their meeting.

Dufus got caught saluting their general, easily the greatest shameful political blunder in modern history. Makes Chamberlain look like a fierce lion; makes a laughing stock out of all prior laughing stocks. Nice "win."

Twitchy-fingered, panicky, loose bowels if called on fact, given over to pretty fancy, in awe of greater men: today's GOP. Still fastest to the dropped penny; let's give them their due.

The Crim Tartars were local, but far from being the locals. The Crimea has been Russian since 1783, and Russians started moving in immediately - the commercial opportunities were immense, and would have become greater still had the dream of Constantinople been realised, which at the time seemed very probable.

What is clear is that the Crimea is in no sense Ukrainian, and was not going to stay Ukrainian very long. The arrangement had all the staying-power of the Danzig Corridor, and the same potential for disaster.

That generally refers to territorial acquisitions, but yes, there are certainly some common concepts.
Revanchism usually focuses on territorial recovery, which is a simple concept. The real issue is revenge for the humiliation of defeat. That's what the people want, and that's what you offer them (while labelling people who don't much care "un-patriotic").

"What they did to Sarah at the White House Correspondents' Dinner... I would've walked out," says a man who didn't have the balls to show up in the first place.

Trump won’t fund veterans bill he just made a big deal about signing

Last Wednesday, Trump signed the bill into law during an elaborately staged ceremony in the Rose Garden at the White House. But hours after the cameras were shut off and the cast of grateful vets and politicians had dispersed, Trump began working against the law he had just signed.

The night of the bill signing, Trump quietly released a statement objecting to three oversight provisions of the law, saying he would not treat them as mandatory. Several veterans’ groups expressed concern about the statement.

Trump’s White House also circulated a memo to Congress objecting to a Senate plan to pay for the Mission Act, arguing the law ought to be funded by spending cuts to other programs.
