One could argue that they hailed from the Canadian territories but they were not independent of Britain. But for Trump to say that he is issuing a tariff against the independent nation of Canada for the war against Britain in 1812 is total insanity and dishonest.
 
Now the rumors are Trump will attend that G7 meeting, but miltanlty confront and attack all the other members.
Welcome to pariah status, USA.
He is also thinking about announcing still more economic tariffs against Canada at the meeting.

The US imposing tariffs on Canada as protection against 'Canada burning down the white house again in response to the US declaring war on Canada' is something I'd have expected to appear on South Park and not used to attempt to justify actual US policy.

it clear that the only thing Trump cares about is playing too and firing up his "Base", and "I Hate All Them There Foreigners" is a good way to do it.
The only question is how bad will the economic disaster be when it hits.
 
The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Trump was strongly considering pardoning Johnson, despite resistance from Chief of Staff John Kelly and White House lawyer Don McGahn.
Johnson was convicted in 1996 on eight criminal counts related to a Memphis-based cocaine trafficking operation. Her involvement with cocaine dealers reportedly came about after she lost her job, her son was killed, she got divorced and her home was foreclosed on.

Not a big deal, IMO. But this "related" headline bothers me:

Trump said he made up trade claims in meeting with Trudeau This was to supporters, who will love him for it: MAGA Troll Emperor.

I would have reversed the relative prominence of those two stories, I think. Most Americans don't know anything about the War of 1812 and Trump's remark is again just a bit of droll trollery. It was the Brits, not Canada, but Canada has QEII on some of their money and that will be enough for some people.

Making this the lead story on CNN's home page is silly. I hope they don't leave it in that position long.

Commuting her sentence is bigotry? Care to walk us through that, because that is not what her supporters are saying, the ACLU is saying, her family is saying.

Really hope that you can, you know, walk us through that?

Kelly and McGahn were reported to be resistant to the commutation, so at least that part of the WH staff would seem to be bigoted...

You know that's not what I meant. To me, Sheriff Joe's comeuppance was that he finally got defeated in an election. I'm sure his contempt of court conviction was richly deserved. I didn't particularly like that Trump pardoned him, but it did nip in the bud any Arpaio-as-MAGA-martyr narrative.

It's a difficult concept, Kelly telling Trump not to commute the sentence of Johnson, there was no need to, being a blatantly bigoted POV. Hard to understand such nuance. :rolleyes:

That right there is what we call a mighty big leap, wouldn't one, given that it appears to assume that the resistance was based on race rather than on "Kelly has reviewed Johnson’s background and her 1996 conviction — she was sentenced to life in prison on drug possession and money laundering charges — and is not convinced she deserves a pardon, an administration official said. And McGahn has also argued against the possible pardon as an unnecessary action by the president, a second official said"

and

"President Trump has become fixated on his ability to issue pardons, asking his aides to compile a list of candidates and stirring dissent in the West Wing with his mercurial and seemingly celebrity-driven decisions."

Huh, but earlier you were complaining that Trump did not think she was white enough?

Huh.

Now I wonder if one could easily find precedent for commuting lengthy sentences as opposed to pardons?

I wonder, hmmmm..... maybe from someone who did not in fact commute her sentence...

Now where would one find such precedent?

The funny part is that Fox News is ripping-and-reading reporting from the "Fake News" Washington Post. Probably in a bid to make Kelly look bad compared to Trump. (Alternatively to make Kelly out to be disloyal). But since it is Fox, a lot of readers could end up instead respecting Kelly more.
