I have no problem labeling the people who participated in the war of 1812as 'Canadians' even if Canada wasn't officially a country at the time. After all, we were in the geographic area that would become the country of Canada, and the name 'Canada' had been used in various location names throughout history (Upper Canada/Lower Canada/Province of Canada).
The main issue is that the forces that were involved in the capture of Washington and the burning of the white house were primarily British soldiers.
One could argue that they hailed from the Canadian territories but they were not independent of Britain. But for Trump to say that he is issuing a tariff against the independent nation of Canada for the war against Britain in 1812 is total insanity and dishonest.
