The Trump Presidency VII

According to the sources, Trudeau pressed Trump on how he could justify the tariffs as a "national security" issue. In response, Trump quipped to Trudeau, "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" referring to the War of 1812.
If the U.S. had a more competent President, a comment about burning down the white house could be seen as a joke. (I remember Obama and Trudeau exchanging various quips back and forth over hockey.)

However, Trump has shown himself to be both incompetent, and quite ignorant when it comes to history. (Remember his claim about the U.S. successfully stopping an Islamic uprising using bullets dipped in pigs blood.. the trouble is, that never actually happened.) In those circumstances, you can never really assume a dumb-ass comment is meant as a joke or is due to the ignorance of the person making the comment.

ETA: Although I wonder why Trump would actually care about the white house being burned down. I hear its a dump anyways. Nowhere near as nice as Mar-a-lago.

Apparently the tariffs imposed on China are in retribution for Pearl Harbor.

Trump tweets

"The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania. During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H. (and me) for N.Y. or Virginia, to abuse. All Fake, she is doing really well!"

"...Four reporters spotted Melania in the White House last week walking merrily along to a meeting. They never reported the sighting because it would hurt the sick narrative that she was living in a different part of the world, was really ill, or whatever. Fake News is really bad!"

She was spotted walking merrily along?

What is she Bigfoot?

They never reported it? who are these reporters?

Johnson deserved it. Her sentence was too harsh, she already did more than 20 years.

But notice Trump commuted it rather than granting a pardon? Not white enough for a pardon? A pardon would restore her voting rights? Once a demonized black drug dealer always a demon?

Commutations are the most common form of granting clemency in connection with excessive sentences.

I would be happy to provide you additional information, but seeing as how the race card has already been dealt, I suspect it would be a complete waste on time.

Oh well.

Medicare will be insolvent by 2026 and social security by 2034

Last time Republicans were in charge we went trillions in debt on a war based on lies and ended up in a recession.

Democrats get control and steer us out of their mess.

Republicans get back in control, put us further in debt to give tax breaks to the rich, increase our already massive military budget, and are well on their way to a global trade war.

We could have fixed medicare and social security, but we know that's not what they want. They want to privatize it so the rich have yet another avenue to **** over the American people for their personal financial benefit.

If the Dems take the House, they should raise trillions for a gargantuan infrastructure program - and then let the GOP raise taxes.

The Smithsonian headline and Trump's tweet is misleading. Saying 'Canada' burned down the White House is ridiculous since It was British Redcoats that did that. Canada didn't become an independent nation until 55 years after the White House was burned.

Of course if you actually read the article, it has the following quotation:
York, now Toronto, was captured and looted. And Newark, now Niagara-on-the-Lake, was burned. British forces attacked Washington and torched the White House.

If you're trying to trying to claim "Look here's proof Canadians were involved", all you've shown is that people are so lazy that they read headlines only and not the articles' content.

Why is linear time becoming such an issue with Trump supporters? Canada's confederation was in 1867 so it didn't burn down the white house in 1812. It's also worth noting that Canada didn't gain the ability to declare war autonomously from the UK until 1931 when the Statute of Westminster passed.

Which leads me to wonder, what IDIOT wrote that article and what moronic editor published it as written?

I have no problem labeling the people who participated in the war of 1812as 'Canadians' even if Canada wasn't officially a country at the time. After all, we were in the geographic area that would become the country of Canada, and the name 'Canada' had been used in various location names throughout history (Upper Canada/Lower Canada/Province of Canada).

The main issue is that the forces that were involved in the capture of Washington and the burning of the white house were primarily British soldiers.

The argument that it wasn't Canada is stupid.

The response to Trudeau's question is incredibly stupid even if Canada was a country in 1812. If that is what Trump is using, he is admitting that he does not have a rational national security basis for the tariffs.

It is a stupid answer by a stupid person.
