Roseanne Barr off the air

I don't see a single parallel with the Roseanne incident. I think SHS statement is completely unhinged and hypocritical.

Anyone want to help explain/defend this?

First you have to remember that most of the racists on the right don't think that they are racist - at least unjustifiably racist - and are more likely to believe that when they are called out for saying racist things that they are actually the victims of the "real" racists.

So you have a starting place where they don't think that what Roseanne said was wrong.

Then you have to remember that these same people really care about blindly devoted loyalty to white, conservative men in positions of power.

A liberal comedian calling out a sycophant for her sycophancy is pretty much the worst thing one can do.

Until they have actually paid for the sins of their forefathers - and stopped whining about it.

Jesus bud, even the bible states the sins are only to be passed for 3 generations. Way to be worse than a malignant god.

Personally I don't take responsibility for other people's actions unless I gave them instruction. And I don't expect others to do so either. If I did I'd be asking every Muslim I met for compensation from when I was mugged, which would make me as absurd as anyone holding the view I'm responsible in any way for **** that happened before I was born.

Seriously you are unaware of the racial history of monkey and ape as racial epithets?

Is calling someone a racial slur different from calling them an *******?

Depends on intent.

If I want to offend someone im going to use language that offends them. If I was so inclined (I tend not to be ) id use a totally different set of language with you than another poster. My intent would be to offend, so being nice is off the table.

You can think blacks are scum and never utter a slur, conversion you can use alp sorts of language in order to offend without holding a negative view of the culture as a whole.

Think of it this way.

If each race had a certain weak spot (the left hand for white people, the knee for asain etc) and was in a fight with an individual, I'd go for that weak spot, my goal is to do harm. That doesn't make me racist that makes me aware of what works and doesn't to each culture.

But the good part is, words only have the power you give them. You have the ability to armor that weak spot, take the opportunity and take one more weapon away from the racists.

(Rosanne meant it is taken imho)

Should there be a penalty social or otherwise for being accidentally offensive? That seems to be the crux of the issue lately.

Yea who could have guessed people would be offended by a racist tirade? Think of all the times you later realized you went off on a racist tirade and thank god were not caught on tape.

So rosane isn't racist, she was just using racist language to attack someone? I am really unclear what your point is.

Gendered insults are okay though?

**** her and all but hypocrisy hurts the cause.
Except it's not hypocrisy. I didn't refer to her as a bitch simply because she's a woman. I referred to her as a bitch because of who she is and what she does, specifically. That should have been clear from the context in which I used the word.

This stuff really isn't hard for semi-intelligent people to figure out. For example, had Barr made her "joke" after Valerie Jarrett had instituted Sharia law while grunting and beating her chest with her fists, there would be a very valid argument that the "joke" wasn't racist.

A lot of jokes toward trump are toward his supporters, who are a rather ethnically non diverse group. Would that not be considered bigotry?
The people who support Trump looked at all the possible alternatives to be president, saw someone who espoused bigoted ideals (Mexicans are rapists! Ban the Muslims!), while at the same time had a history of failed businesses and a rather lengthy list of lies, and said "Yup, that's who I want as leader of the free world".

As such, those supporters can be seen as a combination of racist/bigots themselves (or at least A-Ok with racism), lacking in rational thought (i.e. unable to see through his lies or the inconsistencies of his promises) or just lazy. (And no, this is not a case of just "differences of opinion"... Trump is different than other politicians due to his willingness to openly show his bigotry.) Because of that, supporters of Trump deserve scorn and ridicule, so it shouldn't be seen as 'bigotry' to point that out.

Since when is equating a black person to a primate considered "comedy" and "a funny joke"?

Did I miss the memo ?

Newsflash for those who possess an IQ that falls on the wrong side of the bell curve:

Equating a person of colour to a monkey has never been "a joke", has never been "funny", and has never been considered "comedy".
Indeed. On top of that, she's being smeared for supposedly having ties to Islamists -- a smear repeated in this very thread (sans evidence).

Tom Arnold (Roseanne's ex-husband) had a few interesting things to say...

Seems to think that maybe she wanted the show cancelled. (Not sure if I believe that... seems like a very bizarre way to get out of a contract.)

He did have one of the best twitter comments on the subject:

On the bright side now that Roseanne Barr is permanently unemployable she can finally get inside the head of Roseanne Connor. Really sink her teeth into the character. Walk in her shoes. Become one with. Inhabit the soul of. Do a whole Daniel Day Lewis thing. Or she could tweet.

Interesting. As someone who frequently refers to Trump as an Orangutan, I was hoping we could get your insights.

Comedian makes racial joke, loses job. Oversensitive douchebag liberals complain, TV network caves.

People: just don't think you are making strides in equality and racism. You are not changing the way people think, you are merely silencing them. Keep sticking your heads in the sand and someone's bound to come along and kick your exposed ass back into reality.

War On Racism = War On Drugs = War On Terror = War On Poverty = Just Say No. Accomplishing nothing never felt so righteous!

So interesting that you are so passionate defending a racist.
And do we need to lecture you as to why this is not a free speech issue.

It's not a first amendment issue. But free speech is broader than just the first amendment.

Will you actually be making the argument that this is in fact a free speech issue?

Or are you just going to offer vague assertions?
