When the Friars’ Club was started in 1904, it was first called the Press Agents’ Association. Actors, musicians, and comedians joined later, and the tradition of roasting one member a year began (according to the Friars’ Club website) in 1949 with a roast of vaudeville actor and singer Maurice Chevalier. The roasts weren’t televised until the late 60s, on NBC’s Kraft Music Hall program (the 70s also saw the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast on NBC). From 1998-2002, the Friars’ Club roasts were broadcast on Comedy Central, but since 2002 the network has produced its own Comedy Central Roasts series (the Friars’ Club still roasts members relatively quietly, last taking aim at Quentin Tarantino in 2010).

The Club’s early daises were populated by legendary comedians (Bob Hope, Groucho Marx, Buddy Hackett), many of whom (Milton Berle, Johnny Carson, Don Rickles, Jack Benny) also took their turn as roastee. Roasts also honored celebrities not known primarily for their comedy (Humphrey Bogart, Harry Belafonte, George Steinbrenner). The Friars’ Club motto was “We only roast the ones we love,”

Which fits his own self-image of the stable genius who trusts his gut.

Because he is an impeccable judge of people, anyone President Trump likes is absolutely qualified to perform whatever role he chooses them for. Any evidence to the contrary must, by definition, be #FakeNews and/or part of a deep state conspiracy to deny the U.S. the government it deserves.

IMO this approach to recruitment persists because the GOP is prepared to accommodate the President unless the nominee is so hopelessly flawed that even they can see the downside - and that happens all too infrequently.

Actually he HAS done something. He is working very hard to dismantle everything that Obama did that brought us out of the Bush recession.
 
It's really odd that so many people think they heard Wolf insult Sanders' appearance, when in fact it was a compliment to her appearance attributed to a well-deserved insult to her integrity. The only explanation I can think of is that many people think they heard what they expected to hear, and many others who didn't really hear what was actually said simply accepted those criticisms, because that's what they would expect, too. So, really, it's kind of a "backhanded insult" to Sarah.

Anyway, I don't think Wolf needs to apologize for calling Sanders and Conway liars. #resistTheNewNormal

I agree - this is sadly the best explanation. People are pissed at a comedian because they think that comedian expressed their own shallow views of Sanders. They assume that the comedian wouldn't be talking about her dishonesty and lack of integrity because most people have thrown that out the window to survive or prosper in the world of Trump.

He doesn’t always insult people, when he does they deserve it. I’ve never said this was limited to presidents, we’re talking about the angry pissed off libs at the correspondents dinner. You were the one who needed to narrow it to two people, which is also hilarious!

People are pissed because it’s an angry pissed off sad time at the dinner. Look at all the really good comedians they could invite and yet they invite these angry pissed off leftists, second tier comedians. It’s done for a reason.

There is a world of difference between the past affairs of Kennedy/Clinton and what Trump does.

Kennedy and Clinton did engage in extramarital sex. But such activities were meant to be private, and did not affect their performance as president. When they were "on the job" they were exactly as most people would want a president to be... calm, reassuring, stable.

On the other hand, many/most of Trump's failures are visible to the world (largely because they appealed to his base), and more importantly they affect his policies. When Trump said that neo-nazis were "fine people", it was not some private comment he made to friends, he stated it in front of the media, so that the entire world now sees that the U.S. elected a racist for president. When Trump rails on about people voting illegally or "which hunts" he's not talking in private but putting his tweets and his speeches out there for everyone to see.

If someone were to want to apply the labels, Clinton/Kennedy/Obama/etc. would be classified as "alpha males". Flawed perhaps, but people with confidence and ability that let them function as leaders. Trump is at best a Beta male, if not a gamma. He is a snowflake. Easily manipulated, incompetent, narcissist yet always seeking approval. He is only in the position he is in because of luck (being born into a wealthy family made him rich; assistance by the Russians made him president). Had Trump been born into a middle class family, he would not be president; instead, he would be working at a fast-food restaurant, asking "Do you want a large fries with that? They're YUGE!"

You appear to have gone off on a tangent of your own, rather than answering my questions. And you were specifically talking about whether or not it was below the office of the president to insult people the way Trump does.

I no more did a personal attack against you, than you did against me, or others when you mention that the 'leftists' appear to be missing chromosomes, or when you talk about the 'loser left'

Trump certainly was the topic, I brought up all the other presidents being sqeaky clean republicans and how the left isn’t used to a republican president who fights back. Obviously the point was Trump defending himself against all these over the top attacks. Had nothing to do with your question.

So you agree that Trump goes over and above what any other president has done when it comes to insulting people? Okay. Is it your contention, then, that nobody from the right ever attacked Obama? Or do those attacks not count, for some reason?

Some people are pissed off because someone finally had the guts to call out the White House correspondents to their face for their hypocrisy and gutlessness in not standing up to an authoritarian who has done everything in his power to try to undermine the free press and the rule of law. Along with making clear what a liar Sanders is - something the correspondents should have been doing from the get go.

That some authoritarian groupies like you are also pissed off is irrelevant. Authoritarian groupies are the biggest snowflakes on the planet.

I don't care about the dinner. When the press understood who Trump was and what he represented that should have stopped playing ball with him - that would have been early in 2016. Instead they have let this administration lie with impunity. They should be ashamed of themselves, and ashamed that it took a comedian to point out how far the rot is with them.
