That's probably more like it. $130K is a trivial sum of money when all is said and done, even if it did come out of the election coffers.

Some poor shlub like you 'n me could go to jail for stealing a $2 carton of milk for our hungry child.

The big fish that break the law over far larger amounts some of us are almost eager to forgive.

What a screwed up, upside down state of affairs.

I Know, right. That very thing happened to a good friend of mine named Jean Valjean!

Can you hear the people sing, singing the songs of angry men.....

Stealing a carton of milk for a hungry child? The store might not call the police and instead deal with it on their own terms. A store might understand that calling the police is not the best way to handle this particular incident at this particular time.

Maybe....and maybe not.

We know that it happens for sure. But we can wonder about what is the actual percentage of milk-stealers-for-hungry-babies who avoid jail because the shopkeeper just doesn't call the police.

We absolutely know that it happens we just don't know its prevalence.

There are two Departments of Justice operating in the world. One is run by the government for the people. The other is run by the people for the people.

I don't know what this last sentence means but there are many stores with zero tolerance shoplifting policies. Now one is probably never going to prison for shoplifting by itself. But I could easily see someone being sent to prison for violating probation because of it.

America has far far too many people in prison or jail. We went crazy with draconian sentences in the 80s and 90s and our bail system often just flat out destroys lives.

No I am pretty sure people have ended up in prison for life from shoplifting due to 3 strikes rules.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/04/05/accused-candy-shoplifter-faces-life-prison/82647430/

"Jacobia Grimes is accused of trying to steal candy bars from a Dollar General, and his big problem is that he has five prior theft convictions on his record.

Under the state's tough habitual offender law, that makes him eligible for a sentence of 20 years to life over the latest charge, and the Orleans Parish DA is taking full advantage."

Ouch! We have way way too many people in prison and the dumbass DA wants to do that? He should be ashamed.

It means that the shopkeeper himself can spontaneously act as police, lawyer, judge, jury and even life counselor when they catch a milk thief with a hungry baby. They don't have to involve the government justice system. They can do it themselves. It can be done to benefit various people including the thief and it is accomplished specifically by not calling the police.

This is the alternate kind of justice system and it probably exists in all cultures.

This is really working out well for Trump. He has to be quite happy about how well everything is going. May want to consider bonuses for his crack legal team.

Oh I reckon he has got a couple of hard chargers reading every single word that has ever been written about the scope of Presidential Pardons.

I heard Liberty University is now offering a summer session focused around that very topic, bless their hearts.

Sure, the shopkeeper may use his discretion. And yet others, owned by large corporations have only policies and people that carry out those policies.

Hopefully, these "hard chargers" can find something useful before the FBI also raids their offices for their complicity in Trump's seemingly limitless corruption.

Fortunately we have not gone full police state just yet, and as a progressive I am certain that makes you pleased.

It is funny that progressives like us were so worried about Trump instituting a police state and now conservatives are having similar fears. What is a police state headed by Trump that attacks Trump: The derp police state?
