The Trump Presidency (Act V - The One Where Everybody Dies)

Trade policy is one of the few areas where I think the GOP Congress might actually oppose Trump in a meaningful way, but I don't think guts has anything to do with it. His plans could harm interest groups that they actually care about.

They got their tax cuts for the rich and their Scalia clone in the SCOTUS. Now it's time to get rid of Trump before he starts a dozen trade wars and starts a war with Iran and N Korea.... maybe.

And the GOP is going to get shellacked in Nov and they know it. Now is the time for a few of them to distance themselves from Trump.... maybe.

Talk about alternate realities...

Am I missing the way these two can be reconciled?
From 538 pollster reliability rating.
Rasmussen Reports/Pulse Opinion Research
657 [number of reports analyzed]
79% [races correctly predicted]
C+ [538 rating]

Can they? They tried that with Russia sanctions and it didn't get they anywhere.
If the legislature passes legislation preventing the import tariffs and Trump imposes tariffs, the court would overrule Trump.

It's different from legislating something Trump then has to implement. GOP POTUSes are known for not implementing Democratic legislation. And the GOP is known to refuse to fund Democratic legislation passed in previous terms.

GW had his signing statements attempting line item vetoes and Obama resorted to more executive orders.

“I think” there is a racist on the NRA Board of Directors.

Not admirable, but it’s not a reason to paint an entire organization with the such a broad brush.

*I* think the whole NRA is soiled by having a racist on its Board. To say he's really dumb too. What does he add to the Board - credibility with the goobers down in 'Possum Hollow?

Trump said during an Oval Office meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,“I don’t think you’re going to have a trade war.” Link

When asked, The Dunce shook his head and said he didn't think there would be a trade war. He repeated it. "I don't think you're going to have a trade war." Very reassuring until you consider, in addition to the fact, even his supporters say you can't believe what he says, this is a real estate developer who doesn't have the first clue how international economics work and no experience whatsoever operating an industrial concern. :(

The good news:
President Donald Trump on Monday said he would not back down from his planned new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, creating a possible standoff with top lawmakers from his own Republican party who have criticized the planned levies for threatening the U.S. economy and possibly sparking a trade war. [same link as above]

Will the top Repubs oppose Trump? If their billionaire donors demand they do, you better believe they will.

Financial genius and construction expert!

USA is going to get a nice wood frame 3 bedroom embassy. You guys are so lucky to have him.

OMG!! Just wait until you see the lobby! So much gold, so much Royal Blue ...

The first cites a single poll, namely the notoriously GOP-biased Rasmussen poll. The other is an aggregate of many polls. It's lying with statistics. Not a new thing.

Am I missing the way these two can be reconciled?

Yes, you are. For the first few years Obama was trying to repair the Great Depression brought on by Shrub's reckless budgets. Obama's job was made all the more difficult by Republicans not approving his proposed recovery efforts. So we were in a very slow recovery from a very big recession. This naturally leads to dissatisfaction with the President.

Conversely, Trump is benefiting from a remarkably long, sustained growth period that has zero to do with Trump being president. In fact, one could argue that his financial "policies" will substantially bring that growth to a halt. Until then, he brags about "his" economic growth and the believers believe.

In that context, the difference is fully understandable.

Look the NRA is happy to have Ted speaking for them, he represents their views and is in a position to say them clearly while many members are not. The membership supports the racism and conspiracy theories, the rejection of objective reality and discrediting facts. If the membership had any issue with these things it would surely come up at some point.

Indeed, his views fit with the other stated views on that link.

Which is why I said it seemed more like a core value of the NRA (and yes I was actually thinking of your posting style when I mentioned that)

Come on they have far more than one racist on their board.

The general argument people make then is that the leadership should not be taken to speak for the membership, of course that is exactly their job.
