"All we have to do is kick the door in, and the whole rotten edifice will come tumbling down."

Adolf Hilter just before invading Russia, 1941.

"I promise you, you will be home before the leaves fall!"

Kaiser Willhelm the Second in August, 1914.

I can't tell you if the use of force in Iraq today would last five days, or five weeks, or five months, but it certainly isn't going to last any longer than that.

Interview with Steve Croft, Infinity CBS Radio Connect (14 November 2002)

THEN: Former Attorney General Janet Reno once paid full price for a new car so no one would think she used her office to get a discount.

NOW: Jared Kushner secured a 184 million dollar loan after discussing a possible WH job with a private equity billionaire.

To put this in perspective: I know for sure in Obama admin, and I believe under GWB / Clinton too, as a reporter I couldn’t even *buy a lunch* for senior WH or agency officials, because the $18 tab would be “inappropriate” for them to accept. (Had to split the bill, always.)

This is true. Even group off the record dinners with an Obama official and reporters had to have separate bills.

On President Xi
"He's now president for life. President for life. And he's great," Trump said. "And look, he was able to do that. I think it's great. Maybe we'll give that a shot some day."

For some reason, I'm suddenly thinking of a quote from "Watchmen".

"If that statement starts to chill you after a couple of moments’ consideration, then don’t be alarmed. A feeling of intense and crushing terror at the concept indicates only that you are still sane."

Fast Eddie B: Go to that link then slide down on the left till you see "race". Click on the little black square in front of that word. Read the first entry by Ted Nugent, a member of the Board of the NRA, then tell me what you think.

“I think” there is a racist on the NRA Board of Directors.

Not admirable, but it’s not a reason to paint an entire organization with the such a broad brush.

It's been my experience that government (or at least, military folks) employees can't accept so much as a car ride when on business. I've known them to disclosed conversations they had at a local party when they accidentally found out that the person they were talking to worked as a contractor on a project they were evaluating.

Why not? That organization is perfectly fine with having a raving racist on the Board. Why shouldn't they be considered to be supportive?

Sorry , but the President should not even joke about crap like that.
And if he is not joking, time to look at the reset button in the Declration of Indepence....

If Obama had said that, the most dangerous place in Washington would be in between a Republican Congress-critter and a reporter. They'd have been falling all over themselves calling him a communist, traitor, and everything else. Where's the indignation now?

Fair enough - no organisation can be held responsible for what their board members say. However, the organisation can then condemn such statements and expel them from the board for bringing the organisation into disrepute.

Doing nothing is tacit approval.

When you look at the rest of the statements from other board members, then it seems that xenophobia and bigotry (if not outright racism) are core values of the NRA.

Obviously not, though I was too timid to claim more than "within shouting distance".

And it depends on the security and facilities of the location. Hence my curiosity of where it's kept while POTUS sleeps (re: the WH).

That's a nice broad strokes short piece on the history of the Football, but it doesn't speak to procedures to any degree.
I forgot to check the articles date, if it's recent that may legitimately be down to security concerns.

But thanks for the link... funny to see that both Bill and Ronnie lost their Biscuit (once each).
No details on Bill's cock-up... but I'd blame the SS for not securing Reagan's clothing and possessions when he was stripped for surgery.
Finding it later in the hospital's trash must have been embarrassing. ;)

More on procedures, including missing biscuits.

The military aide carrying the "football" remains physically close to the president, ready to carry out a well-rehearsed choreography of command and control.

The biggest threat that Trump and Co are creating is not what they do themselves, but rather the more and more they fall into madness, the more they make people who would have be seen as extreme and loopy just a year or two ago, now sound as if they are the voices of reason on the Right.

When the Doctors are so crazy that they start to make the inmates look sane, you have a serious problem.

I'm imagining future GOP ads.

"Not as bad as Trump."

"Not a crazy guy this time."

A few die-hard Republicans on this board like to say from time to time that if Democrats running for office try to stress that they aren't like Trump then they'll lose.

Maybe the GOP will need the same advice?

On Saturday Trump hit back in typical style, writing on Twitter: “If the EU wants to further increase their already massive tariffs and barriers on US companies doing business there ...
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/mar/03/trump-escalates-trade-war-threat-tax-eu-cars

U.S. exports to the European Union enjoy an average tariff of just three percent.

Some mistake, surely? By that measure, Trump has massive hands.
