CYA time? OTOH, how many comments like that are left on youtube every day and how many are serious? Go read the article. There's a lot more in the article I would quote, but out of respect for The Rules, you know.

It seems like they started out taking the threat seriously but gave up after doing a few database searches and coming up empty. Did they contact YouTube to see if they could identify the person corresponding to the account? Unclear.

And unless Cruz actually did something illegal, what the hell Could the FBI do?
You can't arrest a guy for making dumb statements on You Tube.

In Canada if you say dumb things on the net ... they can come and take all firearms in the residence ... does the FBI have that power?

I agree .... but ... The AK-15 is a new Russian military selective fire rifle ... the AK-15 will replace the older AK-103 military rifle.

The BBC reports that they get many tips...

So it appears that the FBI gets well over 1,000 tips every single day, of which about 100 are "actionable" every single day.

In other words, if they followed up on every tip they would not have people or time for anything else, and even then they probably would not have enough to inviesitage every tip...

It seems in this case, it is protecting their fourth amendment right. You can be as anti second amendment as anyone and not want to see them taken without due process.
 
What exactly should the FBI have done witht those tips, anyway?

What I'm looking for is how any FBI action would have been compatible with his 1st and 2nd amendment rights to say whatever he likes and own a gun while doing so.

I reported a school shooting threat posted on youtube to the police. The police responded immediately.

The boy allegedly responsible was brought in for questioning.

That is what the police are there for: to act on reported complaints.

The FBI should at least have sent a couple of guys round to Cruz' abode.

AFAIAA it is illegal to threaten to kill someone, so there is nothing onerous about it.

In Canada when a tip comes in to "Crime Stoppers" (and frankly it's the same phone number for all of North America) ... the (largely Volunteer) staff on site files a report to the RCMP ... BUT local police go and do the initial investigation 90% of the time.

Looks like the "violent video games and movies are the cause" argument is back in full force. I've seen it a lot recently on social media, usually along with a request from the poster not wanting to get in a debate about it.

Otherwise they'd have to reconcile the fact that other countries that have the same violent games and movies have a tiny fraction of the school/mass shootings the US does.
 
I don't think there's a causal relationship but it's very hard to deny there's a correlation; school shooters really seem to dig FPS games.

You seem to be conflating entering the school with shooting, a different thing.

It's always shocking to find out that young criminals enjoy a hugely popular genre of video games.
