Merged The Roy Moore Batcrap Crazy Remark Thread/Roy Moore Is Done

If you nelly-ache about "yeah, well that's old testament, so it don't count", and then immediately invoke the old testament "thou shalt not murder", that's pick and choose.
Being a Jackass us entirely different. References to the 10 Commandments are universally understood to be Exodus 20.
Excessive pedantry is being a *********** jackass in this case.

And you just gored my ox.

I don't have a clue. My anecdote was just that. I am not really a hunter. I just went with them. And they were telling me stories.
I'm not much of a sportsman. Barely a fisherman. But so far, I appreciate my game commission here in Massachusetts.

Begging the question.

What is murder? Killing that is not allowed.

Therefore, a commandment prohibiting murder basically says you aren't allowed to kill in situations where you aren't allowed to kill.

It's pretty worthless. All we have to do is to decide something is not murder, and it is therefore allowed.

See: abortion

Murder is a crime
Unless it was done
By a policeman
Or an aristocrat
Oh, know your rights

I'm convinced that there are too many regs and a government that could better serve the public. But I'm not saying we should eliminate all regulations and like you I tend to be a little skeptical of many of the business regulations that some are keen to get rid of. My point is as Democrats we should be looking and working harder to pinpoint the needless ones. We are the believers that government can be a service to the public. So let's make sure of it.

I'm pretty sure all Republicans are not for eliminating all regulations and all Democrats are not for not eliminating any of them.

First step is to stop using stereotypes and generalizations and address the actual regulations that are too weak or too strong.

Which happens to be a common means falsehoods are spread as truth, passing on stories we've heard that we haven't actually checked for their truth.

1) Old Testament, not new Testament

2) "children" is better translated from the original as "youths". In context, Elisha was being menaced by the ancient equivalent of a street gang.

3) The Bible forbids murder (again, using the proper terms), not all killing.

1) I am certain that you have been referred to Matthew 5:17 before in regard to this kind of argument?

2) I've studied the Bible too and I have some corrections of the prevailing translations myself. "Smashed" is better translated here as "give whiskey" and "rocks" is better translated here as "ice." Taken in context this portion of the Bible says that God wishes us to get our babies drunk with chilled Scotch. Or perhaps to drink scoops of frozen babies in Scotch (do you know how to make an alcoholic dead baby float?).

3) Okay, let's ignore the many biblical scholars who translate this as "kill." For purposes of discussion let's just go with the preference of the fundamentalists, who for obvious reasons would stick an asterisk here and translate it as "murder." Now magically God is absolutely okay with his followers killing people in prisons and in wars. But he is strongly against killing of 8 cell blastocysts. Sure.

Doesn't it ever occur to the believers who do this kind of parsing of "God's word" that all they are really doing is trying to find "clever" outs so that they can do whatever they really want to do? Twist and turn and alternatively translate the word of the Almighty to allow them to do all sorts of things prohibited in the Bible, yet still think that they have "The Big Guy" on their side? When they die and are judged do they think they will stand before God and just play lawyer? "Ah- yeah it sort of looks like I sinned there Big Guy but the contract was drawn loosely and if you look in the fine print you will find that technically I didn't really violate the law as written there. Not as I translate, interpret it, place it into context, take it figuratively, etc... Hey God, if you meant it you should have been more careful how you wrote it..."

Roy Moore and his followers are masters of this sort of thing.

If I were a believer I would be terrified to do such a thing because if there is a God, I am certain he/she would not be amused.

OK, stop battling me. My original point was and is that we make a mistake by thinking that our job should be limited to turnout. That we also need to sell our message to even moderate Republicans. And selling means listening to the needs of customers.

I thought about adding something to my post about not battling you. ;)

What you say here is exactly why though, we need to end use of the stereotypes and word of mouth anecdotes. Better, IMO, to remind people regulation is not a single monolith.

I agree with you.
I spend a lot of time in Seattle,Portland, SF and in many rural towns. I make a point to really talk with the rural folks who tend to vote Republican to get their perspective. I make it a point not to argue with them, but to listen as much as I can. Frankly, I'm convinced many of them would vote Democratic if they felt that they were listened to more.

More info is available on the attempt by the State of Alabama to purge minority voters from the rolls and illegally prevent them from voting. This wasn't just a bureaucratic error, this was a concerted effort to violate their civil rights.

Did Alabama Just Violate Federal Voting Law?

There were so many things wrong with this election process that it's almost a miracle that it turned out the way it did, and so many minority voters were able to get to the polls and cast their ballots.

This entire country is in dire need of election reform, and this just showcases how egregiously the GOP is willing to break the law, or at best walk the knife edge of doing so, in order to maintain power.

FWIW, Moore has not yet conceded defeat. Even Trump has told him to, apparently.

He is batcrap crazy- no reason to expect him to concede no matter the facts or who advises him to do so. He is waiting for God to fix it for him. Or for proof that LBGTQs bused tens of thousands of blacks from other states into Alabama to vote for Jones. As if Alabama blacks were voting for him...
