Maybe he isn't so dumb and understands how exploiting the tribes' natural environment would be massively divisive among them an open opportunities for white men to rush in, claim tribal land and profit?

Trump asks Japan to build cars in the U.S. It already does

President Trump delivered a rebuke to Japan Inc on Monday.

"Try building your cars in the United States instead of shipping them over. Is that possible to ask? That's not rude. Is that rude? I don't think so," Trump told executives from local automakers during a trip to Japan.

But Japanese automakers have been increasing their investment in the U.S. for decades.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association estimates that its members built nearly 4 million vehicles in the U.S. last year. Exports from Japan to the U.S. have fallen from 3.5 million cars a year in 1986 to just over 1.5 million in 2016.

It said that three out of four Japanese cars sold in the U.S. last year were built in North America, including Mexico and Canada.

In context it's just incoherent babbling that contradicts what he was saying. Does anyone know if he was reading prepared remarks and adlibbed that because it doesn't fit with the larger point of his speech?

My eyes got stuck on this: "They're going to invest $1.6 billion in building a new manufacturing plant, which will create as many as 4,000 new jobs in the United States."

That's investing $400,000 per new job - supposing the numbers are reliable. That is not very efficient, is it? I have a hunch that small business and the services branch create more jobs for that kind of money.

Depends on the degree of automation. Their job is to build cars as well and as cheaply as possible not to create as many jobs in the US as possible. After all this is corporate not government money

1.6 billion US dollars is a lot for a Japanese company that has a lot of yen. They are going to have to trade yen for dollars. Who has and can get dollars that want yen? Japanese exporters. That will affect prices and increase the trade deficit.

I wonder if Trump has ever heard the words current account surplus.

It's better than the Foxconn deal, that was a $3 billion dollar incentive for 3,000 jobs. And that's not even including the other sweeteners they were offered on top.

Also, jobs are bad. This factory is going to make X number of widgets with those 4,000 jobs as input. If everything else remained constant, we are much better off if that factory could make X number of widgets with 2,000 jobs, 1,000 jobs, or even 100 jobs.

If Trump is touting a figure of 4k... the reality is likely closer to 400. :rolleyes:

I would think that they are going to be employed for more than one year.

Dividing the cost of the building and infrastructure by the number of employees means what exactly?
