Kevin Spacey accused of sexual assault on minor......and he's gay

I think hopping up on a 14 year old boy already makes him pretty bad at being gay. As I understand it, that's not normal behaviour for teh gayz.

You think? Lots of women and gay men I've known over the years freely and happily admitted to losing their virginity to much older partners, when they themselves were underage, and that of course is in a UK context of an AoC of 16. Straight men, not so much (Mrs Robinson is an outlier).

It's notable that the first episode of the original UK Queer as Folk revolves around the 29 year-old lead meeting and having sex with a 15 year-old - less of a difference than in Spacey's case - at a time when the AoC for gay men was still 21. The Daily Mail and other usual suspects obviously tried to whip up outrage, but weren't particularly successful.

I assume he meant it along the lines of "I choose to act on my sexual preferences" which presumably includes exploiting desperate and potentially vulnerable young men and teenage boys trying to make it big in Hollywood.

Then again I wouldn't be surprised if his attractiveness and fame would be more than enough to get him any partners of his choosing. Apparently hooking up with some star struck beautiful teenager enthralled by his manliness, something which they could never experience with peers their own age, is just not enough for some people.

Huh. Not that it's on topic, but I never thought Spacey was a handsome man. Admitedly, I'm a straight man myself, but he doesn't strike me as particularily attractive, unlike, say, George Clooney.

I just realised. The eighties:

A fourteen-year-old Jeffiffer Connely appears in naked in Once Upon a Time In America.
Malcolm McLaren puts a topless fourteen-year-old singer on the cover of his band Bow Wow Wow. (on her stomach, if I recall).
1983 (?) Dutch hit film Schatjes had a full frontal sex scene involving a teenage actress that has now been cut from the film because it is now technically kiddy porn.
I remember some Swedish cult film about teenage angst on a school trip. Had nudity.

Amazing how times have changed. You'd be burned at the stake for even suggesting naked teenagers in a mainstream film.
You can add Bill Wyman and Mandy Smith to that list, I always thought that at a minimum he should be on the sex offenders register. John Peel (still a BBC hero) seems to have had a thing for teenagers (under 16) but that was back in the sixties.

I guess I missed the part where anyone said, "Gay people can do no wrong, being touched by Teh Gay makes them perfect."

I must be distracted today, because so many people are commenting thusly, someone must have said it.

Tons of gay people are a-holes. Tons of every kind of person are a-holes.

This is why a lot of people are mad at Kevin.

I'll never watch this scene from LA Confidential without thinking about this news:

"on the set of "Badge of Honor", Vincennes meets with Sid Hudgens, who offers him another job: Hudgens is deliberately setting up LA District Attorney Loew in a blackmail scheme by arranging a sexual encounter with Matt Reynolds (the same young actor arrested by Jack himself at Christmas) both of whom will be busted by Vincennes. Vincennes feels extreme guilt about the job and goes to the hotel early to let the young actor off the hook. "

Fictional Spacey - saving young actors from the casting couch!

Wonder what it's like to play the good guy, knowing that in real life you are the bad guy in equivalent situations? Obviously, it didn't make him reconsider...

Wasn't Spacey 26 or 27 at the time of his drunken assault on Rapp?

I think that people are saying that rape is neither a gay nor a straight thing, but a rapist thing, not that gay people are somehow naturally more virtuous.

He only mentioned his gayness in order to get some sympathy and divert attention from the accusations.

I think Spacey bundling his homosexuality with his predatory behavior is pretty reprehensible. The two have nothing to do with each other.

Ok, I agree.... gay people should not be assumed to be rapists/child molesters/deviants/etc. And for that reason, this situation will unfortunately could serve as a lightning rod for those that want to condemn homosexuals.

But how should Spacey have handled the issue? Obviously his assault/in appropriate actions was against another male, so the issue of homosexuality was already out there. Not sure if him openly declaring his sexuality was an attempt to gather sympathy or a way to simply say "this is out anyways so let's be clear about it".

A little off topic... I remember when the Pixar movie A Bug's Life came out. (Spacey played the lead villain in it.) I read an interview where he talked about rumors surrounding his homosexuality, and he was bragging about how it used to help him have sex with women, along the lines of "Oh, you think I'm gay? Let me show you how straight I am..."

Really? If this was the case him declaring himself gay wouldn't have mattered.

The truth is that some people are incredibly sensitive about associating anything even remotely potentially unseemly and indecent, including even completely consensual and perfectly legal sexual relationships with minors (children!) let alone sexual assault. Apparently we aren't supposed to recognize this as "homosexual behavior" especially not if it happens to be illegal and/or abusive, primarily because it could be used by homophobes.

Here's two BBC articles showcasing this attitude:

Theatre and film director Sean Mathias told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that coming out should be something to "celebrate".

"Kevin Spacey coming out is very untimely," he said. "I don't think coming out when he's been accused of something else is the right thing to do. Because you're gay doesn't mean you want to sleep with children and in some people's minds this will be heightened."

Engaging in this kind of sloppy thinking leads to absurd conclusions: A teenage boy of 16 years, a child mind you, is not gay if they want to have sex with a classmate. If they would be sexually attracted towards an adult man they'd perfectly gay although if this adult reciprocated these feelings he'd most certainly not be gay.

The core point is to avoid associating homosexuality with sex with minors and children at all simply because it's a subject many find highly creepy and icky.

(bold mine) Yes but...

Not to defend Spacey at all if he was pressuring young boys, but just as people are saying his coming out to distract from the issue of pedophilia was wrong, so is conflating pedophilia with statutory rape. A 14 yr old is not prepubescent.

Can we at least keep this important concept clear?

The age of consent has been 14 in some states, so what he did could have been legal depending on where it took place.

I agree. Its unnecessary over-complication and politically correct bollocks. The reality is...

Teenage Boy wants to have sex with another teenage boy = gay
Teenage Boy wants to have sex with older male = gay
Older male reciprocates = gay

All this complication is made up to try to pander to the gay community. The facts are that there are gay paedophiles, straight paedophiles and bisexual paedophiles. An adult who molests and/or has sex with under age children is a paedophile. If his/her victims are same sex, then she/he is a gay paedophile. Being gay does not give you immunity from being a paedophile.

Most states (all?) have laws saying an adult cannot have sex with a minor even if 14 or 16 are considered old enough to have sex.

Any state that doesn't address the age difference rather than something like over 18 can't have sex with under 18 is likely convicting a lot of normal teens for normal behavior.

Most of my friends were either sexually active at 14 or almost getting there. When I was 13 my best friend already had a baby. It was normal.

But I get it we need some laws preventing predatory sex. It sounds like Spacey was wrong in this case and it does read as creepy.

In the state of Georgia, the age of consent is 16. There's no part of the law that says that someone over 18 cannot have sex with a 16 year old. Up until 1990 something, the age of consent was 14. Again, I don't think the law said anything about it being illegal if the person was over 18.

I only bring this up because a lot of people incorrectly think that the age of consent is 18 or that it is always illegal for someone over 18 to have sex with someone under 18.

Yes, I agree that it was an ill-chosen time to come out. Spacey invited accusations of both trying to create a sympathetic diversion AND gay water-muddying. I get all that. I was referring more to posts like this, in this conversation thread:

Or... He's pretty typical at being gay. But no, I'll play along. Kevin Spacey is probably an outlier in the Hollywood gay subculture. Just like Harvey Weinstein is probably an outlier. Hollywood is not really like that. Just a few bad apples. Very few. Hardly any of them gay.

What does this mean, and whose position is this snarking? Too many layers for me, I guess.

Playing devils advocate for a moment it could be argued the still in the closet Spacey chose this moment to come out to avoid all the inevitable questions about why he would be trying to get it on with another man.
