Ed Dueling protests spark state of emergency in Virginia.

This is that bad faith thing I was talking about.

The white nationalists' interest in "preserving the Confederate statue" is wholly a function of their white nationalism. It's patently absurd to assert or even imply it's reasonable to expect that an entire troop of avowed white nationalists would hold a rally in support of Confederate symbols in a way that is "separated" from their white nationalist beliefs.

Picking a symbolic cause as an avatar for a bigger cause is an effective trick.

Gandhi built his civil disobedience movement on protests against some crappy tax law.

Did MLK murder anyone? Did he burn anyone alive? Did he set any bombs in churches? When compared to his enemies, his faults hardly seem worth mentioning. I don't doubt he had faults but any he had are trivial compared to the faults of those he opposed.

It's remarkable this even needs to be said.

I should take history lessons from the man who gave us Al Capone's Vault?

That being said, it is a despicable quote.

Why "despicable"? Disagreeable, maybe. But why despicable?

A lot of historical characters, even the ones we consider heroes, did terrible things. Condemning the CSA doesn't prevent you from honouring some of its people whom you consider had worthwhile traits or achievements.

Where are you getting your history lessons from? Blacks were beaten, lynched, white civil rights workers were beaten and murdered. MLK held to his non-violence.

It wasn't until after MLK was murdered that groups like the Black Panthers began. And the black riots were long after that.

That's not actually true. But while MLK and the SPLC mostly operated in southern states, the Black Panther Party was started in California, in 1966 (King was assassinated in 1968). Two very different environments, with two very different focuses.

What good things did Confederate generals/politicians do that are meaningful enough that we should memorialize them to this day?

I wonder what happened to all the statutes to Native American Chiefs and their Great Victories in scalping settler ....
it's our history, after all.

Stacko was pointing out that the idea of promoting the narrative that "both sides" were partly to blame was an old one.

Yup and it's just as wrong now as it was then.

As an aside, I can't read the handwriting - what does that say?

"How can you, a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ, be such a hypocrite. You're not fooling anyone but yourself in your nauseating talk about non-violence. You demand a program to overcome poverty and "flow in" untold (can't make out the word) in your high living and running all over the globe to feed your own egoism."

A ridiculous article which I think begins to show the problem with fascist hysteria. Antifa already thinks Trump supporters are fascists and therefore deserving of a violent response. Now, they are being mainstreamed by the media and the Democratic Party.

I don't think you linked the correct article. The one you linked provides a brief outline of the Antifa movement and describes how very different it is to white supremacism

It's not just an outline of the Antifa movement. It's essentially an endorsement. It also fails to mention that Antifa has attacked people at pro-Trump rallies rather indiscriminately, and otherwise tried to shut them down.

Also, this:

Behind the masks, antifa are nurses, teachers, neighbors, and relatives of all races and genders who do not hesitate to put themselves on the line to shut down fascism by any means necessary.

depending on your definition of fascism, could be said about pretty much any violent, extremist group, including neo-Nazis. Although, admittedly, neo-Nazis don't tend to wear masks to hide their identities.

Mumbles, did I just see your avatar picture mentioned on Twitter as part of this whole statue discussion?

Is it a comically ugly Confederate statue?

Yes, it's a hideous rendition of Nathan Bedford Forrest, co-founder of the KKK, made by a (very) amateurish sculptor.

Riiiiight, so the key content is what's not written in the article

In large part, yes. You do realize that's the primary means by which bias is manifest in the media, right? Actually I guess you don't. Until very recently, my complaint against the mainstream media was the liberal bias in news curation, not so much the number of baseless or incorrect assertions which were made. Of course, that has changed recently. Even the news that is reported can't be trusted.

What's the point of posting an article as evidence of your claim when, by your own admission the key information which allegedly supports that claim isn't in it

I'm finding it very disturbing that people are really arguing that the anti-Fascists are the villains of this particular tale.

Not all people. Just the hard core Trumpers, several of which are posting on this forum. These are the people who get incensed when they are called Nazi-sympathizers for being sympathetic to the Nazis of Charlottesville.

Not the only villains, or even the principal villains, but just villainous enough to enable bothsidesism. Gotta push the party narrative.
