Rachel has another...

A Trump transition team lawyer, Brian Benczkowski, who this year then went to a gig for Alfa Bank until a month a ago, is now.... wait for it... Trump's pick to head the DOJ's Criminal Div., a massively important post (it was Mueller's before he went on to FBI head).

And yes... he's discussed recusal details.

This is starting to sound less like an administration and more more like an early retirement plan:
1. join the administration
2. recuse yourself from anything that could be trouble and/or work
3. ...
4. Profit

It's in german:

But yeah: Europe doesn't like the latest round of sanctions! This story was even written by benjamin bidder, a notorious russia basher. If he can find an anti russian angle he will! (He almost manages even: Only 34% think russia is a reliable energy source, while half a year ago 25% thought so of the US. (and now it's down to 13%))

Coming back to this forensicator stuff and the VIPS memo to Trump, here's VIPS member and American hero Ray McGovern breaking it down like only he can. Also gives a great overview of the whole Russia conspiracy thing including insides on Brennan, Comey, Mueller etc who he all knows personally from his long career. Worth watching (and spare me your opinion about LaRouche, geniuses, the interviewer only says a couple of sentences):

The forensicator analysis assumes that the files were copied directly from a DNC computer, which of course is not necessarily the case: They could have been copied from another hacker computer that did the original download. The analysis is worthless.

July-21 | WaPo reports Intercepts show Russian ambassador Kislyak discussed Trump Campaign with Sessions during the 2016 Presidential race

* " “It was a short introductory meeting. I asked Jared and Paul to stop by. We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago and was since ended by the Russian government, but it was not a campaign issue at the time and there was no follow up… I was asked to attend the meeting by an acquaintance, but was not told the name of the person I would be meeting with beforehand.”"

*“I was asked to have a meeting by an acquaintance I knew from the 2013 Miss Universe pageant with an individual who I was told might have information helpful to the campaign. I was not told her name prior to the meeting. I asked Jared and Paul to attend, but told them nothing of the substance. We had a meeting in June 2016. After pleasantries were exchanged, the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton. Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information. She then changed subjects and began discussing the adoption of Russian children and mentioned the Magnitsky Act. It became clear to me that this was the true agenda all along and that the claims of potentially helpful information were a pretext for the meeting. I interrupted and advised her that my father was not an elected official, but rather a private citizen, and that her comments and concerns were better addressed if and when he held public office. The meeting lasted approximately 20 to 30 minutes. As it ended, my acquaintance apologized for taking up our time. That was the end of it and there was no further contact or follow-up of any kind. My father knew nothing of the meeting or these events.”

Well, it's certainly being over-sold on Trump&Putin fan sites as proof that it was an insider leak and a exoneration of Russia, which it certainly isn't, and of course Seth Rich conspiracy theorists love it. The general flaw in the analysis is that there is no reason to assume that the person who compiled those files for distribution -- the leaker -- was also the hacker who stole them. There's no way to tell how, or how many times the files might have been copied before ending up in the leaked file. For example, forensicator guesses the files were copied to a USB drive, when they might have in fact been copied from a thumb drive or SD card given to the leaker by the hacker(s).

Forensicator further infers that the leaker's machine was probably in the US Eastern time zone, which is possibly true, but not necessarily. But if you (hypothetically) already had solid evidence of Russians hacking the DNC, then circumstantial evidence that the leaker was in the US is very interesting, huh.

Putin throwing a hissy fit over Trump not being allowed to remove sanctions easily. He's expelling 755 diplomatic staff.

He expected results for his efforts, and this is just unacceptable. I mean, even that insufferable douchebag Assange seems to be getting something out of the operation, for Pete's sake. The entire western world of Putinella whores have been typing their fingers to the bone 24/7... Greenwald barely has time left for cheesy self promotion... and they can't even manage to sabotage this half- hearted sanctions regime?

From reading the article that characterization doesn't seem quite accurate.

It seems unclear how many Americans will actually have to leave Russia.

But it does seem clear that hundreds of Russians will be out of work as a result. And the extra paycheck I expect most of those probably got from the Kremlin will probably be history, too.

It's an analysis of the available evidence and not worthless at all. It's true, there could have been earlier steps, but of course that's speculation you have no evidence for, and it's coming from people who take the fact that the name of an infamous Soviet intelligence guy was left in Kyrillic letters in the metadata as evidence that teh Russians did it.

Ray and the LaRouche guy had a good laugh about that.

On NPR this morning they were talking to somebody, I forget who it was, but he was wondering how Putin was going to expel 755 diplomatic staff since of the roughly 1000 diplomatic staff in Russia, only about 350 of them are Americans - the rest of them are local hires.
