CNN Doxxes a gif maker

Did it start out that way, though? If CNN is mocked in a Trump tweet, I see no reason why it wouldn't want to figure out where the meme came from. Even if it's just from a corporate PR standpoint.

They are a news organization, why are they worried about random memes?

the internet is FILLED with memes about them and their hackery.

Like Trump himself, they should ignore the background chatter.

What benefit does finding out where one, among a sea of memes,is from?

Nobody CARES about it. it was a non story until they made it a story.

Whats the endgame of finding the person responsible? How will it help them? Will they track down every meme maker on the internet?

its crazy

Sure, it could have ignored the tweet and maybe it should have. But from there, it found out more about Mr. Hole's posting history - that he was spreading a lot of offensive stuff anonymously, stuff he obviously didn't want to put his name to. So CNN gets on its high horse ... but why do people post, completely gratuitously, offensive nonsense, then freak out if they are unmasked? I find fault with CNN, but I don't really see why Mr. Hole is seen as a martyr. Why not stand behind his statements, if he has negative things to say about Jews, Muslims etc.?

don't care about his posting history..........the IMPORTANT bit is what a powerful, worldwide 'news' organization tried to do to a random Joe because they got butthurt.

CNN does not need to be unmasked. It reports things under its own banner.

They need to be 'punished' for crossing the line

You can't say it is anonymously trying to insult people without any fear for consequences. Is it not a problem that people spew vile rhetoric anonymously? I've seen in the media and this was already bothering me 10+ years ago. Where my uncle lived it was Mexicans ... subject to some hateful commentary. What is the appropriate response?

The 'appropriate response' is no response

Unless,of course, yer Anita Sarkeesian or the like

Its the internet.say what you like, put your name on it or not

Do you want to see CNN staffers beat up? The same way Mr. Hole would presumably be beat up (or worse) if people knew his true identity (Which, BTW, CNN did not reveal)?

I want to see them apologize.

I want to see them realize what they did was wrong, and WHY iot was wrong

I want to see them understand that they don't get to pick out one of 'us' and play internet cop without facing the rest of 'us'

they played a stupid game and theyve now won a very stupid prize

Sad day for them

I tend to agree, but I don't think CNN set out to do this purposely. It searched out a meme, things escalated from there. Unfortunately, IMO. But CNN and its reporters are not exactly hiding behind anonymity.

Of course it did it purposely.why bother about the meme to begin with?

They got butthurt and SPECIFICALLY set their 'investigative staff' on the 'case'

They contacted the guy and blackmailed him

Sucks that they had to be such ***** because MOST of their staff deserves no blowback..lessons learned all around,Yeah?

What's your point?
What was yours?

I would've thought my comments were pretty straightforward. One poster offers some contemporary data on how the news media is judged by the general public, with a certain percentage of those polled giving the fourth estate (and its related peripherals) low marks for trustworthiness. You chime in, offering the opinion that in actuality the grade should be zero.

Some might see such a comment as hyperbole, and maybe you don't actually stand behind what, on the face of it, is a remarkably silly statement. But there is no shortage of people who, contrary to what Mr. Jefferson maintained, believe much if not all of the news media to be...troublesome. Someone who deems them of zero value might very likely be one of that group.

The media (which is to say those who work in news gathering, reporting, commentary and the like) are individuals. They, as well as their executive and/or corporate higher-ups, make judgement calls all the time. Certainly in today's highly-charged and adversarial atmosphere the effect of a missed call, like an umpire officiating a playoff match rather than a sandlot pickup game, may be more pronounced.

Just as it's part of a sporting contest for each participant to try to work the rules and the referees to their favor, I'm under no illusions that the relentless onslaught against the legitimate news media will subside, especially when the chief antagonist leading the charge is the President of the United States. No doubt they have been and will continue to be effected. But theirs is not just a job, it's a duty. Let's please not forget that.

Their job is to follow the story. Trump has in the past retweeted things from some very unsavory sources.

It is only natural for them to try and find the source to see if that is also a story worth telling.

BUZZFEEED STYLE!

lolz

the "journalist" is a 27 year old troll.

typical old media hires someone with zero ethics and zero skill, because he posts things on the internets.

If the president tweets it, it is not random.

the internet is FILLED with memes about them and their hackery.
Tweeted by POTUS?

Nobody CARES about it. it was a non story until they made it a story.
Some people care about it, but I agree it was initially a non-story.

It generates clicks. People are interested in the controversy even if they have no special love for CNN.

Its the internet.say what you like, put your name on it or not
Yes. That's not what this is about.

I want to see them apologize.
CNN has not harmed this man. He was thrilled when Trump tweeted it. But then he couldn't stand the heat. Get out of the freakin' kitchen.

I want to see them understand that they don't get to pick out one of 'us' and play internet cop without facing the rest of 'us'
Cool. I'm part of an "us" as well. I don't know if my "us" overlaps with your "us."

Of course it did it purposely.why bother about the meme to begin with?
Because the president tweeted it?

They contacted the guy and blackmailed him
I'm not defending CNN on this issue. On the other hand I'm not defending Mr. Hole either. All he has to do is stop posting that garbage.

I agree.

You think the dinosaurs at the CNN are all excited about how the new guy from buzzfeed brought in the page views, despite getting everything wrong, not noting that trumps video was completely different and selling out journalistic integrity by writing idiotic things like CNN reserves its rights to expose some redditor?

We got the page views!

KFILE baby! Pew pew pew!

Lolz

I think it's time for your social justice warrior badge.

You kept true to your narrative while throwing in those glittery cherry picked
"facts".

Then you finish it off with noises, exclamation points and the lolz.

Thanks for your hard work.

The threat isnt even veiled, they published it in an article for everyone to see. I cant imagine what the interview was like. Zero self awareness by CNN. Oh and anti-semitism is legal. Posting about it is legal. CNN has no right to censor it.

Heres the thing, hate speech is in fact protected speech here. That's kinda the whole point of having free speech.

Here's the thing about protected speech here, if someone uses my son's image to "warn good Christian white people with daughters about the face of secret negros", I get to call them out on it & possibly get to hit them with a cease & desist order

Such as the "Hillary next to the Star of David with piles of money behind it" or the "Black thug next to a false set of stats claiming that most white murder victims are killed by black guys" pictures. In those cases, the sources were pretty obvious.

And, again, these are now official WH communications, so of course, people will attempt to verify and investigate anything in them.

It is only natural for them to try and find the source to see if that is also a story worth telling.

And it turns out, someone in the WH is still looking at scummy reddit/4chan posts. And isn't very good at covering their tracks.

And, it must be reinforced.... This Is News. No one is asking for the right to view Donald and Melania playing in the shower. I don't care if Ike liked to cover himself in honey and have bear cubs lick it off. I care that the POTUS, leader of the free world, is getting his information from bigots, anti-semites and misogynists. THAT IS NEWS. Conservatives don't like the news so they're trying to discredit the source.

The news is still out there. Someone (could even be Little Eric, again) is getting newsfeeds from reprehensible anti-American right wingers. And our president finds them funny and share-worthy.

The same folk who made up the lies about Obama's birth, him being a love child of a famous socialist and having his book ghost-written by a pipe-bomber....? Now they're not concerned that the POTUS is getting his important and share-worthy material from the Alt-Right cesspool.

Tracking people down the way media has always done is now "doxxing". Okay.

I suppose it won't be long before we see a thread complaining that the FBI "doxxed" someone who posted a shooting threat on Reddit.

I will address this in a 2nd post later but here..

ou couldn't*be more wrong on this issue.*

The tweet was harmless,*Trump*retweeting it was harmless ... CNN over-reacted like power hungry tyrants and used their vast resources to track down a Redditor and threatened him. They did in fact cause him harm in terms of the emotional stress he was caused by fearing he*would be exposed and potentially have serious real life consequences, so much so that he contacted CNN and by their admission sounded "nervous" and profusely apologized.*Trump*isn't Mussolini, he's just a dumb****.

And*no, it is not reasonable to say that all someone has to do to not be bullied by a multinational corporation is to "stop thinking or saying certain things" and tow the party line.

ifthe president tweets it, it is not random

And what*of it? It's embarrassing that a septuagenarian narcissist (or whoever operatesthat*Twitter account) seemingly has a better grasp on the subtleties of communication in the internet age than does a multi-billion dollar broadcasting network staffed by (supposed) professionals in the matter.

If*Trump's such a terrible person*as so many arekeen to claim why don't organisations*like CNN focus on the legitimate concerns over his tenure*in office, instead of this...well,*playground*◊◊◊◊?

If the President does it, it's news. It's really that simple. The defense seems to be "He's a moron, leave him alone, why dontcha?"

The "Doxxing Scandal" is a diversion. The story is that the President of the United States thinks this sort of material is worthy of sharing with the citizens of the United States.

And what's this nonsense of him not having his actual deeds (for certain meaninings of that word) covered? That's the cause of his temper tantrums. He's getting covered; he's just not getting covered with breathless awe the way he would prefer. He needs adulation, not reporting. He should tune out everyone other than Hannity, Fox and Friends and Breitbart. They adore him and think, like he does, that he can do no wrong.

I wonder if that means that beating CNN to a pulp, metaphorically, is official White House policy now.
