Getaway driver arrested for murder.

Gilbert Syndrome, are they only an offensive weapon if taken out in public? (- Referring to knuckle dusters, or, as they say in Glasgow, 'a knuckle sandwich').
Please stop with the inaccurate "education" on British society and mores.

A knuckle sandwich, Glaswegian or not, is a punch, specifically to the mouth, with a naked fist.

Perhaps you were thinking of a Glasgow kiss, or a Jaggy Bunnet?
Also nothing to do with brass knuckles (or knuckle dusters).

This doesn't surprise me coming from someone who thinks all victims of home invasion are secret criminals.

I never said that.

Anyways, here's what the police think:

Police Chief Gary J. Gemme said. "If you are a law-abiding citizen and you're not involved in illegal guns or gangs, the probability of you being a victim of a home invasion is very remote."

Even pro-gun websites understand the issue.

Yes, that there are no statistics in either article.

You see? That’s where we need some stats. Assuming (as we must) that TTAG readers are law-abiding citizens, it would be really helpful to know what percent of home invaders hit people who weren’t involved with drug dealing, loan sharking or divorce attorneying.

I believe the man in the OP was 74. Not too old to be a drug dealer I suppose. Any evidence yet that he was?

Meh...it's nevertheless becoming quite clear what is happening - and that this "Home Invasion" issue is nothing but hysterics...at least for the vast majority of people.

<snip>
Some weedy little thirteen year old armed with a pocket knife picks your lock and enters your home, looks up at you pointing your gun and regretting the life choices that brought him to this place, and you shoot him and kill him dead.

<snip>

Not the best example you could have constructed.

"Weedy" is a good description for many junkies.

Who the hell knows how old they are? Do you ask for ID?

"armed with a pocket knife" = "armed".

Someone "picks your lock" = "broke into your house".
So, in your example someone of indeterminate age who looks like a junkie breaks into your home armed.

I don't have a gun in the house, but if I did, confronted with that scenario, well ... I might not shoot on sight, but he'd better be damned harmless looking about any moves he makes, because he's pretty much used up whatever benefit of the doubt he might have started with just by being there, armed, after having broken into my home.

Well, according to Vixen, she could tell immediately by build. Apparently, she's never met a teenager with the build of a man, which I find <ahem> hard to believe.

There's something to be commended about solving problems that don't actually exist. The success rate is quite high and the satisfaction probably feels authentic. "My life might be generally spiraling downward, out of control, but dammit, I've got my protection from home invasion right here on the nightstand."

I would rate someone who takes comfort in the extremely unlikely as more rational than someone who prays to Jesus.

Essentially this. If a gun, probably not (benefit of doubt) unless it is dropped real fast and kicked away also.

Perhaps, but some of us have, in fact, been the victims of home invasion. There was a rash of home-invasion robberies and burglaries in my neighborhood about a half-decade ago. About half the homes in the neighborhood were hit at some point, several successfully. Mine was hit three times, though the robber only managed to actually enter the house once, and was just a dumbass kid who fled as soon as he was confronted, as he didn't expect anyone large and male to be home (women and old folks are easier to intimidate). The other two times, they were scared off while trying to pry open windows.

I kept a shotgun under the bed for just such an occurrence. Fortunately, I never needed to actually fire it. Eventually, the police bowed to public pressure and actually did something about the problem, but it was pretty much open season for a few months.

I don't know where you live or what kind of life you lead, but home invasion happens a hell of a lot and I know for a fact it happens often in the UK. I've heard no less than 5 stories just this past few months, and my house was actually burgled in January. There's a Chinese family who live up my street and they had their house invaded during the day when they were at home and nobody else saw or heard a thing, they were robbed at knife-point.

You'd be surprised what actually goes on in the real world beyond these forums.

I'm pretty sure Jules lives somewhere in reality beyond these forums.

It happens a hell of a lot, I guess a lot of people don't hear about it or they just live in communities in which such things do not happen at all.

I live in a very nice part of South Liverpool, but that doesn't change a thing, as it becomes more of a desired target for thieves in general.

The jury is out on that one, imho. If you can call the idea that home invasions happen a lot "hysterics," then I'm not sure if you truly do live in reality. Either that or you live in a very lovely gated community in Singapore like my brother does, lol.

Well I've never lived anywhere where this was a problem so I'd say it comes down to subjective experience.

It'd be much more interesting to see statistics broken down by area, for instance.

Well I'm only speaking of the UK, and in particular the North-West of England. I know for a fact that Liverpool and Manchester have suffered many spates of organized home-invasions and robberies, and then there's been the less-organized robberies, too, smaller gangs, crackheads, kids.

Footballers are often having their houses burgled, too, and that's almost always organized by known gangs.

There's a hell of a lot more going on than hysterics, which is why I wondered where Jules lived.
