It depends on the firearm. Handguns? Yeah, you're probably right. Rifles? Lots of countries allow their citizens to have rifles.

This doesn't change my opinions on gun ownership at all, even if I consider the home/gunowner 100% justified.

Some people think a shotgun is best for home defence, personally I don't have an opinion ... but many many countries (most maybe) allow people to own shotguns for example.

And! :) not necessary to change your opinion ... a good discussion and debate is just as enlightening either way! :)

Agreed. Not when we have the merits of brass knuckles to hash out. Take your typical "assault" knuckles. Not even made of brass. Probably not as accurate either, so why legislate against one type and not another?

"Brass Knuckles" are Prohibited Weapons in Canada, I've literally never even seen them.

A shotgun is definitely best for home defense; however, there are virtually no inexpensive, secure quick-access means of storage for them. OTOH, I keep two pistols in a bedside safe that I can open in literally two seconds in the dark.

I suppose you could store a shotgun on an open, unsecured rack and the ammo in a quick-access safe nearby, but that's exposing the shotgun to theft and children. I wouldn't do it.

Which brings us back to the OP: How was he able to so quickly get to the rifle and ammo? I haven't read the OP since it was first posted, so I'm probably forgetting or missing something.

I like the trench knife for that - handle is hard metal knuckle duster and the blade cuts nicely - great for close in fighting. Though there is a lovely device that has a short but heart-reaching blade that goes on the hand. You just turn palm down as you strike with it and the blade goes right in. Amazing how many customers did not realize immediately why you needed to do that. I also recommend Gerber Mark 1 and 11s except after they started being made in China (idiot move). All mine are US.

Barska is a good brand, but note the price; "inexpensive" is one of my criteria. Besides, especially in the dark, long guns are more prone to fumbling than are hand guns.

Btw, if I were forced to rely on a shotgun, I'd go with a 30" double-barreled model, the classic stagecoach scattergun. Easier to load in the dark. Besides, if you need to shoot more than twice with a shotgun, you just aren't trying.

It would be "allowed," in the sense that no one can tell you how to what to do in your own home. OTOH, you are liable for all the bad things that could happen because of the way you store it.

Most "Home Invasions" of this type are done by people who know each other and have got a grudge - there's always a back story that leads to the "Invasion". Any time I hear of this type of home invasion, I do not think in terms of "perpetrators" and "victims" since both parties seem equally responsible for the carnage.

A lot of journos would lead you to believe that this type of Home Invasion could happen to anyone. No....it doesn't. As long as you are not dealing drugs and stealing from people, you never have to fear this type of Home Invasion happening to you.
