Disgraceful! Richard Spencer Sucker-Punched While Giving Interview

Because it works.

That sounds like you're saying that the ends justify the means, which circles back to be being allowed to smash your computer to shut you up because "it works".

What does this "crime" thing suddenly have to do with anything?

You called it "self-defense". Do you even know what the term means? You can't claim self-defense against an act that isn't a crime.

That quote doesn't say that Spencer was punched because his puncher didn't agree with him, not in the slightest.

What an interesting bit of dishonesty by you. 3point14 responded to YOU saying that punching Nazis was self-defense. The claim was about YOUR reasons, not the protesters'.

Wonder why you're still waiting, it's not like I haven't said so in this very thread multiple times already.

Your explanations boil down to the fact that you disagree with him, even while you claim that it isn't the reason. The contradiction's your fault, not mine.

Would it be OK to punch Communists, or if you are Ukrainian, people who support Putin?

They might be considered a threat.

Because it works.

What does this "crime" thing suddenly have to do with anything? The holocaust was legal, therefor it would not be self-defence for someone to attack the people implementing it?

I assume you also consider it ethically permissible to punch Zionists (like me). Is there an objective criteria for punch eligibility, or is it just a case by case, subjective calculation performed by each potential puncher?

Interesting assumption.

Personally I put the line at organizing to enact genocide. As far as I'm concerned someone can be a nazi and hold such beliefs, it's when they actually come out and organize themselves so as to act on their beliefs that they are in need of a punch. Others probably put the line somewhere else I guess.

Lots of very angry stuff

Well, I can see you can't think rationally on this topic so I shall leave you to your ire all alone and hope I never hold a view you disagree with because, apparently, it's okay to punch people at that point.

That might be somewhat defensible if you could show that they had a shot in hell of making it happen. Otherwise there's no question of self-defense here.

And if they did have a shot in hell chance of making it happen, merely punching them is going to be somewhat insufficient.

If it ever did get to that situation, then *that* is when a full armed resistance would be the right response - because free society would *already* have broken down.

What is even more hilarious about the likes of AntiFa is that they support an actual fascist by the name of Bashir Al-Assad.

And while I respect your view is even take it a step further.

If a group of people were planning even a low scale attack, with proof, and evidence of the police being unable or unwilling to stop it, punch, kick, stab and shoot them all you want. If there is a real immediate threat I'm a pretty "law of the jungle" kinda guy when people want to start disregarding law to harm others.

What I cannot support is attacking people for some nebulous possible future attack. Once you start attacking folks for ideas, you become the aggressor , I don't hate violent ******** that want to hurt people I like I simply hate violent ********.

And I add to it, "is it likely to be a harbinger of the downfall of society?" No....

There are a number of people in the US who advocate, defend and/or carry out violence, shutting down speech and so on against people they don't like. Left wing anarchists (who are a small minority, but can still cause real damage), in particular, seem to favor this. In my college town, for example, anarchists disrupted a meeting held by a nonprofit that was aimed at discussing ways to help the local homeless population, because the meeting organizers didn't submit to their demands to add LGBT issues to the meetings agenda. They also sabotaged and vowed to destroy a small vegan bakery here based on a one-sided claim that they had mistreated a employee. Then you have bigger things, that involve much more than just anarchists, like the Milo rioting and other attempts to prevent controversial figures from speaking at Universities.

I don't think we're about to approach the downfall of society or anything, but I do see this stuff as a large enough problem that it's worth speaking out against it. Richard Spencer being punched is just one small instance, in the grand scheme of things, and of course, on its own it's not a big deal. When it becomes broadly defended, I see that as a larger problem. It's still probably not of massive importance on its own, but it's one of many things that should be spoken out against.

I think a lot of people don't realize that when you justify something against people who you don't like, or people whose ideologies you don't like (I don't like right wingers' ideology either for the most part), you risk making it more acceptable against people who you wouldn't want to see this sort of thing happen to as well. That's the whole point of free speech, for example.

Yeah, I mean this was basically some of the logic used against Communists under McCarthyism, wasn't it? That being a Communist, or even simply a "suspected" Communist, made people a threat and an enemy of the state? I haven't studied that time period much, so I apologize if I'm getting it wrong, but that's my basic impression.

Also, think how easily this sort of thinking could be used to justify violence against Muslims.

Please tell me you live in Eugene. I hate to think this sort of thing is prevelant.

I live in Bobbyknighville, Indiana. A little over half of our population is college students (almost 50,000 of them).

Which is highly subjective and has always boiled down to "People I don't like". Hell, Pinochet could point to Pol Pot as an excuse to send dissidents on helicopter rides on the grounds that they were "communists" like the Khmer Rouge. Or people were actively comparing Islam to Nazism when Da'esh came along, yet instead of "punch an imam!", great pains were taken to say #notallmuslims.

.

He could have, but apparently didn't

Have you gotten around to getting that trademark on strawmen?

What strawman? That Richard Spencer advocates ethnic cleansing.

But as long as it goes though the normal political process and they are exterminated in a legal fashion it is all good I guess.

NO ONE has said that there was nothing wrong with it here. So essentially accusing Newtons Bit of siding with Spencer is not only dishonest, but a nice way to make Bit seem like the enemy. Do you not see why that's wrong?

There isn't anything wrong with it, it is covered by free speech, if you take issue with someone advocating genocide that is your problem and makes your a bad person. The only thing you can do is ignore them and hope their followers set outside the law and then maybe you can do something. Otherwise you are in the situation like those good american christians who helped set up death to homosexual laws in africa. Bad people maybe but not really bad enough to do anything about.

What takeover? The Trump administration is collapsing.

His supporters seem to highly disagree with this and use the claim that it is as proof that the media is entirely out to get him because it ignores the many victories he has had. Like how we are ending daycare for the kids of service personnel, that is a serious strike against the entitlement culture in this country.

What strawman? That Richard Spencer advocates ethnic cleansing.

Well, here's another strawman: that this is somehow what I was talking about. What I was responding to was right there in the post you quoted:

Yep there is nothing fundamentally wrong about advocating genocide, it is just one of those things.

Nobody said that.
