Merged SCotUS nominee - Neil Gorsuch

It was rather odd, I thought.

You get to take that stance since you were the only person I saw who thought Trump would win from he day he entered. For the rest of us it made some sense. Why raise a stink when Hillary will be the next president anyway?

You would have to be insecure boor to publicly shake hands like that with someone from such a position of power as president. What a crass bully.

From the Alt State Dept twitter account:

"SCOTUS nom Neil Gorsuch founded a group during his prep school days called 'Facism Forever Club'. In normal times, this would eliminate him."

Facism Forever, eh?

I'm sure he has grown out of his fascist youth.

I realize that we were all kind of strange in high school, but while I was pretty right wing (although even I could see the John Birch guys were nuts), facism? Not something to be proud of, even as a clueless high schooler.
Gotta watch that confirmation bias.

You might want to look for plain old ordinary evidence before buying into extraordinary claims. It was a joke in Gorsuch's yearbook, not a real thing. You can see the yearbook entry here.

Would you rather the Senate had gone through the motions and then rejected him? That was my recommended strategy.

Yes, actually. That's the way the system is supposed to work. There would have been public hearings that would have allowed all sides to set out their views and explore his. And each Senator, by name, would have had to express his opinion and defend his vote.

The main reason the Repubs didn't even consider the nomination is that they didn't want American voters asking why they were rejecting him: "This looks like a qualified, moderate guy. What's the problem?"

Some people think Obama made a mistake by nominating Garland, and that he should have nominated, say, a black or Asian woman and made opposition to her a campaign issue. Once again, Obama hurt his side by being reasonable in the face of radical unreason.

I don't understand, it's not the current president's job to nominate anyone to the SC, that's the job of the next president. Because democracy or something.

That's exactly what Joe Biden said to do in an election year.......

Chris B.

You are 100% wrong. Surprise meter remains <0.

Where did I say "Biden never made [the statement]?"

In your post #204

Chris B.

Wrong.

No I don't think you do.
Logger informs me that I don't want policymakers who believe this world is the one we need to protect. Logger, how did you come to this belief? I don't want people who think they're going to get raptured, or who want to start wars to fulfill some end-times scenario.

You chose not to address my take on evangelical voters. Which is fine, I've never been sure whether to paint them all with the same brush. Some of them believe in stewardship and have other values I share. But many are rabid rightists eager to see the world burn.

No end-times pols please.

Logger: I would have welcomed a good faith argument.

I had something that could have damaged a top, top judge. He told me an ethnic joke. It was at a social event - the judge was seated between two 22-year-olds, including me, and he made a dumb joke. My father said he would kill me if I made it public. He was not joking.

I followed the judge's decisions and didn't see anything outrageous. But if the civil rights of people with AIDS had come before the court in the mid-80s I would have been strongly tempted to remind him of that evening.

Both he and my father are long gone now.

The court has seemed fairly moderate to me. I could criticize Citizens United, but I didn't think it was a disaster. On gay marriage and Obamacare the moderation encouraged me. Even Antonin Scalia did something to protect the rights of criminal suspects.

Does anyone know why it was Clarence Thomas swearing in Trump? I thought this was usually done by the chief justice.

What was the joke?

I guess this is OK to tell.

"What are the first four words a Mexican child learns?"
"Attention K-Mart shoppers."

I think he said four which would make K and Mart separate words.

Service was slow in the restaurant and he joked about checking to see if the waiter had a green card.

He didn't go full-on Earl Butz though. He was pretty gracious.

Two Snopes articles on Neil Gorsuch

I think these two articles are important, there are plenty of real reasons to oppose Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court, the use of click-bait stories on the other hand...

Claim: Neil Gorsuch called for the "advancement of the white race" and segregation in a 2012 statement.

FALSE

The quote about the "advancement of the white race" is real, but it was said by David Duke.

Claim: Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch founded a 'Fascism Forever' club at Georgetown Prep and made white separatist/anti-Semitic statements.

FALSE

Real issues are complicated. What I need is a simple, clear reason to be afraid of his nomination. Molesting puppies seals the deal.

I have to admit that I'm interpreting the exchange in the same way as Chris B is. Perhaps clarification rather than nay-saying would be more useful?

And his pro-4th amendment stances show that he's not a fascist. But whatevs, let's look at a joke he did in college and not on his actual positions laid out in official court documents...

If Scalia weren't anti-gay, he'd have been one of the best friends the left ever had.
