Agree, but how much of that is being handled by the players? They are generally being given a decision tree. "If the situation is A do X. If it is B, do Y". Even before advance stats and scouting, guys did things mostly because "that is how you do it". I agree there is a ton of strategy and planning that goes into baseball, but very little happens between the lines. The players themselves tend to have one very good attribute and don't have to worry about much else.
Football, on the other, has a lot more moving pieces and requires the players to read the situation and improvise more.
