Although I haven't been able to watch the whole thing, I think Clinton handily beat Trump. I have heard he only got worse and descended into complete incoherence if the transcripts are anything to go by. The blah blah blah about the Internet, ISIS and his son made no sense at all, so it would be unreasonable to think he could have won any points by talking complete gibberish.
It doesn't really matter what online polls say. As has been mentioned these are easily manipulated by whoever feels most motivated to do it. I remember PZ Myers used to send his followers off to smoke polls on creationist websites that asked if angels exist.
Furthermore, it is of course somewhat difficult to accurately gauge whether a debate was successful because some respondents will simply state that whoever they already support were the winners. I don't expect some of the hardcore Trumpsters will declare he lost the debate. They may argue that the debate was a stitch up by an "over prepared" Clinton with her "facts" and her "knowledge" but still declare that Trump won on the grounds that he's a "straight talker"!
I think Trump tried to keep things toned down to begin with and was wrong footed by Clinton's appeal for things to be cordial. He seemed to want to continue albeit in his own obnoxious way ("Secretary Clinton... Is that okay?), but Cinton put the first jabs in like she was ringing the dinner bell and Trump reverted to type by snarling and slobbering and charmlessly and witless my interrupting.
I think we should predict that unless he's even more of a fool than we think, he won't try to be "nice" from the start next time but will start to use gutter tactics. That's what has gotten him this far so I think he will start trotting out stuff about Bill Clinton's affairs. Just my hunch.
