Although I haven't been able to watch the whole thing, I think Clinton handily beat Trump. I have heard he only got worse and descended into complete incoherence if the transcripts are anything to go by. The blah blah blah about the Internet, ISIS and his son made no sense at all, so it would be unreasonable to think he could have won any points by talking complete gibberish.

It doesn't really matter what online polls say. As has been mentioned these are easily manipulated by whoever feels most motivated to do it. I remember PZ Myers used to send his followers off to smoke polls on creationist websites that asked if angels exist.

Furthermore, it is of course somewhat difficult to accurately gauge whether a debate was successful because some respondents will simply state that whoever they already support were the winners. I don't expect some of the hardcore Trumpsters will declare he lost the debate. They may argue that the debate was a stitch up by an "over prepared" Clinton with her "facts" and her "knowledge" but still declare that Trump won on the grounds that he's a "straight talker"!

I think Trump tried to keep things toned down to begin with and was wrong footed by Clinton's appeal for things to be cordial. He seemed to want to continue albeit in his own obnoxious way ("Secretary Clinton... Is that okay?), but Cinton put the first jabs in like she was ringing the dinner bell and Trump reverted to type by snarling and slobbering and charmlessly and witless my interrupting.

I think we should predict that unless he's even more of a fool than we think, he won't try to be "nice" from the start next time but will start to use gutter tactics. That's what has gotten him this far so I think he will start trotting out stuff about Bill Clinton's affairs. Just my hunch.

I think he'll threaten to do it, but chicken out on the stage. I imagine that he's frightened by the prospect that he has no idea how Clinton would respond to that. He knows it wouldn't provoke her, he know she'll be prepared for it, but he can't figure out how she would respond.

If I had coughed even once on this stage, I would have lost this debate instantly. And so you know what? I did not cough. Not even once. You sniffed and you lectured and you made faces and you sighed. And I stood there. Impassive. Like a screensaver. I focus-grouped my number of blinks.

I know this piece was tongue-in-cheek, but this part is so true.

Look, we STILL have HDS sufferers going on about how she looked sick. Yet, Trump can sniffle all over and it doesn't matter.

Al Gore was vilified for a single sigh in a debate. Yet, Trump spent the whole time sighing.

It is absolutely the case that if she had had a single blip, a cough, a sneeze, a sniffle, she would have been ripped for it.

The bar is so low for this guy. You keep seeing reports about how he "did what he needed to do," which totally begs the question of expectations. As I said weeks ago, people are going to call his performance a success if he doesn't call her a bitch at some point.

"Ooooo, he never called her any names during the debate. Shows you how presidential he is!"

You're mostly hearing that he did pretty good because he met those "well, at least he didn't come out with pee splotches on his trousers" low-bar standards from the Trump camp, whether the campaign or supporters. Virtually no actual news sites are giving him credit for out-performing her in the debates.

I follow a lot of the international sites and all of them say "advantage Clinton" to one degree or another. They aren't writing opinion pieces but include a line or two in the articles, particularly articles on Trump's whining on Tuesday morning.

I will say, the Australian piece was interesting, because it basically created a dichotomy between a rational adult and a juvenile, without actually saying it. She had policy plans and rational discussion, and he blustered. That was their approach in the synopsis.

Someone on Twitter said it was the School Bully vs. the School Teacher, which I think sums it up.

Donald Trump could have walked on stage, dropped trou, defecated before the cameras, and then spent the remainder of the debate pleasuring himself while talking about how great he is. Hard Right wingers (And some on this board) would still have claimed that he won the debate, and that he was just telling it like it was.

CLINTON: (unexpectedly) Did you just criticise me for preparing for this debate? Because what I was really preparing for was to be president of the United States, and that takes hard, hard work! Hard work I'm ready to put in!

(summons an eagle) (it perches on her shoulder) (fireworks shoot off) (a glass ceiling shatters)

This is awesome!

If I knew how to make a meme of that, I would.

(heehee-just remembered Trump's flustered response to Sam the eagle flapping his
wings. :D)

Great. How am I supposed to sleep tonight with that image in my head?

There's a meme JPEG contrasting the shot of that (and even across the desk seemed too close to The Donald for the bird) with a pic of Obama with one on his gloved forearm, falconer style. Both appeared calm. :D

... and then spent the remainder of the debate pleasuring himself while talking about how great he is...

Only in Italy. :p

That's not too far removed from his statement that he could walk out onto Fifth Ave. and shoot someone and not lose supporters.
