Protests During National Anthem...

Funny how Kaepernick's generous charity donations and charity work gets overlooked.

Does he get a cut? I am not up on the CBA between the league and the players association.

As I understand it, individual players do not personally profit from their own jersey sales.

The players overall get a cut of total merchandise revenue, but I dont believe they actually get a check for their share from the league. I suspect that these are paid through salary increases distributed to active players, as each team's salary cap increases each year, individual player salaries would commensurately increase each season, and revenues pay for this.

I guess so. Personally, it wouldn't matter to me whether he did it,or not.

Nevertheless, I think the protest have gone way beyond Kaepernick: I believe they have become larger than the man. I see a lot of people in the news focusing their frustration on Kaepernick, as if convincing him to stop would change anything. I think it is too late for that.

It's catching on.

Aussie rugby league greats who are also indigenous people have called for protests at the singing of national anthems at the semi-finals this weekend.

Whether they do, we'll know in about 6 hours.

Rather amusingly the most famous person in opposition to this call is also an Indigenous Australian, expect him to get a lot of abuse from ignorant activists, who are going to assume he is white.

But speaking at the AFL grand final parade in Melbourne on Friday, Franklin wasn't having any of it.

"I think it's pretty stupid", he said.

"It's the Australian National Anthem.

"It's part of our sport and part of our history."

And here is Lance Franklin's Wikipedia biography:

I live in Arizona. Sheriff arpaio tweeted out that he would talk to kapernick what respect means. A sheriff facing criminal contempt charges stemming from racial profiling in his department claims the mantle of patriot.

This is why people of color may not feel very patriotic.

Good insight. I don't know if it would "Quash' the movement, but I do agree with you that even publicizing the protests is good for NFL ratings and furthers the movement.

Thanks.

If this protest movement was good for NFL ratings, then why are those ratings dropping?

Correlation is not causation. For me personally, a large number of season ending injuries of great players as really made me think about if players want me watching this version of the game.

Correlation is not causation.

True, but given that ratings are going down, why would Jules think that it's good for ratings? There's not even a positive correlation to point to as a possibility that it's good for ratings. So even if it's not the cause of the ratings slide, there's still no evidence it helps.

Unless it has a small positive effect inside the larger negative effect? Maybe if we had survey data.....

....are you giving out research grants?

That doesn't answer my question. The fact that it remains a logical possibility that there could be a small positive effect doesn't change the fact that Jules still made an assertion with no evidence, not even circumstantial.

Well, yeah.

Now we do:

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/pub...re_americans_tuning_out_the_nfl_over_protests

"A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that nearly one-third (32%) of American Adults say they are less likely to watch an NFL game because of the growing number of Black Lives Matter protests by players on the field. Only 13% say they are more likely to watch a game because of the protests."

There are (of course) some caveats: professed preferences may not materialize into actual behavioral changes. Furthermore, not everybody watches football to begin with, so if you're less likely to watch football but you already don't, that won't make any difference. Nevertheless, the poll results suggest that these protests are hurting, not helping, the NFL's ratings.

Zig, given that I think Roger G is an utter (rule10) I like how this is working out.

and nearly 4 years later the NFL admit that they got it wrong, and now, finally, claim to support such protests and Black Lives Matter.

A bit late....

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Saturday (NZT) he and the league strongly support players expressing their opposition to inequality and police misconduct, saying the league's leadership was "wrong" for ignoring players earlier and that it now endorses their peaceful protests.

"We, the National Football League condemn racism and the systematic oppression of black people," Goodell said in a video released by the NFL.

"We, the National Football League admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier, and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the National Football League believe black lives matter."
