Trump runs for POTUS / Trumped Up! Part V

The fact that Trump is not attuned to the political strategy of the anti-abortion movement is dangerous? Ignorance is dangerous in general, I suppose, although ignorance of how to speak disingenuously about that particular issue strikes me as rather innocuous, and perhaps even comforting.
What Dr Keith said was general, not specific. He doesn't listen to advisers - who no doubt do know about the political strategy of the anti-abortion movement.

More to the point, of course, is that Trump says anything he assumes is useful; what he says bears no relation to anything else, such as intent, practicality, vocabulary or syntax. We know that from his public record. The only thing one can take from a Trump policy is a notion of who he's trying to appeal to with it. As a guide to the future it ain't worth spit. You surely know that's true yourself.

Take the six weeks leave thing. He's trying to appeal to women and he thinks pledging that might do it.

Regarding this six weeks off, National Review actually had a decent post covering Clinton's response and the persistent debate about the wage gap.

[E]ager to prove the superiority of her own maternity-and-paternity-leave proposal, Clinton has chosen to lead with an interesting one: offering maternity leave without also offering comparable paternity leave will “undercut women in the workplace and depress their wages.” Her campaign argues this “negatively affects women’s return to the workplace, can discourage employers from hiring or promoting female employees, and can increase the gender pay gap.”

...

Clinton seems to be arguing that offering women options hurts women. The more (and more generous) the offer, the worse the harm. She would cure this by ensuring men are offered more options too. But the problem is not the existence of the options, it is their exercise. If employers are required to offer both men and women some amount of paid leave, but they know women on average will take more of it, the effect on the workplace will be the same as if women were offered more in the first place.

The writer probably overstates their position with the last line: Clinton's plan is better than Trump's. Maybe they are more effectively similar than they first appear, but one cannot say with as much confidence that they would be effectively identical.

Colin Powell calls Trump 'national disgrace' in email leak

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-us-2016-37364189

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has reportedly called Republican nominee Donald Trump a "national disgrace," according to leaked emails.

The Republican retired four-star general's comments were revealed in a hack on his personal emails.

The emails were posted on DCLeaks.com, which has reportedly been tied to other recent high-profile hacks.

Mr Powell, who has been quiet during the election, said he had "no further comment" but was "not denying it".

I've always believed exactly what Powell said about Trump. He doesn't have a clue about how hard the job he's seeking is.

Powell and Condoleezza Rice, who succeeded him at the State Department, also joked that Trump seemed in over his head in running for president.
“If Donald were to somehow win,” Powell wrote in a June 23 email to Rice, “by the end of the first week in office he'd be saying 'What the hell did I get myself into?’”

He said he was going to release his physical, but he didn't. We have learned that he takes medicine to control cholesterol however. Accordingly, we should assume that Trump is on the verge of a triple bypass. Right? ;)

Devils advocate:
One could also say, at least he does what is needed to help him health wise. Clinton won't drink enough water to remain standing. Even after handlers beg her too.

In that case, please attend more games. Yankees games!

In that case, vote for for Johnson, or Stein, or that other guy. I may do so myself.

Some time back in the 80's, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston put on an exhibit which comprised a huge hydraulic press set against opposing walls of the building, and connected to the turnstile at the entrance such that every time a patron entered the museum, the press would move an increment outward. If enough people had entered, the building would have collapsed and killed or injured everyone inside. I went twice. At least I only plan to vote for Trump once. :p

I would be spinning that turnstile like a top!

Do you believe anything he says? Honestly?

A hell of a lot more than what Hillary says.

He speaks from the heart with a lot of passion, sure he gets things wrong, but he's a novice, he'll get better.

If Hillary wasn't so sick, she might speak with a little more passion. That's how she used to be, oh wait.

Donald potentially caught self dealing with his foundation.

Jody Young, the painter’s former manager, said that at the time he had spoken directly to Melania Trump about how the painting would be framed and displayed.

Her plan was “to hang it in either the boardroom or the conference room of the club,” Young said.

...

If the painting is still hanging in the club, “it’s on display, in his business enterprise. It’s not on display in a charitable enterprise. It is arguably enhancing the experience of playing golf there,” said Marc Owens, the former director of the IRS division overseeing tax-exempt enterprises. “It’s not a charitable use. It is a non-charitable use.”

I can provide quotes from pro-life advocates that support my claim.

You're completely begging the question.

Can you provide anything to support yours?

Logic. Anti-abortion people are against abortion because they think it's murder. Why should you relieve the accomplice (at the very least) to murder of responsibility for the murder? It's obviously nonsense. Sure, you could argue there might be mitigating factors, if emotional distress was involved, or genuine fear of physical harm, but you would still expect an accomplice to murder would be held accountable under criminal law. And I already pointed out the most persuasive argument in favor of my view. To wit, a woman who murders her newborn baby will be charged with murder. There is little to distinguish a newborn baby from a fetus if you honestly believe that a fetus is a human being.

I don't think the pro-life movement is disingenuous when it talks about protecting women. He is ignorant of the movement and the very people he is trying to attract. That he can't be arsed to know their agenda but expects their support is revealing. That he can't be arsed to know a complex topic before he starts proposing legislation or policy is frightening.

It could be revealing of the fact that he isn't actually anti-abortion. George W. Bush also committed such a gaffe, as when he responded to a hypothetical question, about one of his daughters getting pregnant and wanting an abortion, by saying that he would leave the choice up to her. Sometimes it's not ignorance so much as an inability to act ("act" in the sense of an actor playing a role).

I don't suppose GWB's comment was exactly what he wanted to say and perhaps you can't read people's minds?

Nah.
