Trump runs for POTUS / Trumped Up! Part IV

I really want to read the stories about the Trump campaign when this is all over. I bet there are some juicy tales about just how nuts it has been.

Writers are chronicling his every daily move. Publishers are pounding on their writers to get every chapter done. Photographers are shooting millions of shots per day to provide irrefutable documentation.

Who will publish the first book?! Who will make the most outrageous claims?! Who will get the most late-night bookings?!

Stay tuned. Film at 11.

Just to add an interesting tidbit to the general election discussion, I was at a dinner party last night with a friendly acquaintance who is a professor of government and a key political consultant for the Democratic party. He said that Hillary has a 7 point lead over Trump, and it has actually been remarkably steady despite the fluctuations in the headline polls. He claims that the fluctuations are due to response rates (e.g. in part due to short-term enthusiasm for one's choice) and not due to undecided voters flip-flopping on their allegiance. He thinks the voters are pretty well locked in and that Hillary has a much higher probability of winning than Nate Silver is coming up with (using his polls-plus forecast, which is at 25% last I checked).

That's probably the best information I have, so I'm going with that. At the very least, that's the view of the numbers geeks inside the Democratic Party.

Seems to be a reasonable analysis to me, especially the highlighted part. As stated elsewhere, I'm hard pressed to think anyone is undecided at this point.

Texas megachurch pastor Robert Jeffress would vote for Trump over Jesus because the bible demands a strongman, and Jesus would be weak on terrorism.

“You know, I was debating an evangelical professor on NPR, and this professor said, ‘Pastor, don’t you want a candidate who embodies the teaching of Jesus and would govern this country according to the principles found in the Sermon on the Mount?’” Jeffress said. “I said, ‘Heck no.’ I would run from that candidate as far as possible, because the Sermon on the Mount was not given as a governing principle for this nation.”

Jeffress, who has said freedom from religion is a “perverted idea,” argued as a Trump supporter that the U.S. government should not be based on Christian principles.

“Nowhere is government told to forgive those who wrong it, nowhere is government told to turn the other cheek,” Jeffress said.

“Government is to be a strongman to protect its citizens against evildoers. When I’m looking for somebody who’s going to deal with ISIS and exterminate ISIS, I don’t care about that candidate’s tone or vocabulary, I want the meanest, toughest, son of a you-know-what I can find — and I believe that’s biblical.”

So, the classic "Kill them all, let God sort them out".

Probably a bit of both. His numbers really had nowhere else to go.

I really do think that people who assume that Hillary will cruise to victory need to be very careful. The gradual rebound in Trump's numbers and corresponding improvement in his fivethirtyeight chances of winning are, IMO, indicative that there are a lot of people out there looking for reasons not to vote for Hillary and who are therefore willing to switch (back) to Trump if only he'd stop saying ridiculous things.

If only he can.

So who do y'all think will win in November and why?

Hillary. Because Foolmewunz assured me that there are less people in the USA that are completely nuts than it seems.

That's just a joke of course. I don't think you need to be nuts to vote for Trump. The vitriol traded for so many years between ordinary people on the left and the right is enough to drive people permanently to one side or the other. The candidate him/herself is less important that "my side" winning.

Still... Hillary.
