Trying to compare the poll numbers in any other POTUS election 2-3 months out from the election vs the resulting election outcome aren't valid because neither leading opponent in any race in my lifetime has been like Trump. To make a comparison you need to look at Herman Cain or Ross Perot, both candidates from the business world that looked good until people got a closer look.
People are not going to suddenly decide Clinton is corrupt and instead choose a loony-toon. It's not like two not so different candidates and the public preference shifts between them. Trump is not qualified, more than enough people know that, and it isn't going to change.

While I agree in principle. There is something that happens over time and that is people become accustomed to reality. Sometimes it takes only a few years and sometimes it takes generations.

Think of it like a Grateful Dead. Thousands of people would show up at every single venue but the Dead never had a single Billboard number 1 hit. In fact they only had 1 single song break the top ten.
Sorry Donald, it means little to nothing when in relation to the total electorate.

Do you know how they're reaching those voters to poll? I'm curious about whether these polls are mostly conducted by landlines ... which might mean under-sampling of young and/or lower-income people.

Depends on he poll. Some are reached solely via landline, and they tend to skew an older, more conservative demographic. I think lanline only is becoming less and less common though.

Why isn't she CRUSHING him? The money spent is wayyyyy lopsided!
I've been asking the same question and the answers seem to include:
- There are a lot of people out there who are genuinely Trump supporters and who think he will "Make America Great Again"
- There are a lot of people who will vote the GOP regardless of the humans on there
- There's a lot of people who cannot bring themselves to vote for Hillary beause she is a woman
- There are a lot of people who cannot bring themselves to vote for Hillary becauase of her "issues" - real and imagined
It's possible that any GOP (or Democratic Party) candidate would poll around 40% even if they were poorly regarded and spent no money whatsoever.

Well my brother-in-law is very clear about this. In fact if it was in his power he'd prevent any woman from holding public office. That said, he's already a firm Trump enthusiast although Trump's latest "policy" on immigration (not deporting all illegals as soon as possible) has him reconsidering (though in truth he'll vote for the GOP Presidential candidate as he always has).

Would that be your wife's brother or your sister's husband? I think there's very few American voters whose opinions are that retrograde. I mean, given a choice between a Republican woman nominee who he agrees with on every issue and a Democrat who he doesn't, when push comes to shove, who would he vote for?
In answer to Dog Town's question though, I think it's because votes are sticky, and partisanship still plays a large role (actually larger than it used to, which is why we haven't seen a true landslide election since 1988).

In the past in local elections he has said that he has chosen not to vote when the GOP candidate was a woman. I know birds-of-a-feather and all that but among his family and buddies, his views are quite typical.
