Ellen DeGeneres has been accused of being a racist after tweeting a meme of Usain.

The Photoshopped image showed her riding the back of the Olympic gold medalist in what is now an iconic image of him casually smiling at the camera during his winning 100 meter men’s final sprint.

The caption read: ‘This is how I’m running errands from now on.’

'You thought it'd be funny to post a pic of yourself riding on the back of a Black man? Nope. Delete this racist garbage,' tweeted MikeAllen_47, of the meme...
Quality humor cannot survive unscathed in these days. I figure that racism really is gone when white lesbian comedians can ride on the backs of fast black men and nobody does anything but laugh.

Gotta find your outrage where you can.

The Games are incredibly rich Meme fodder.

One I saw yesterday was the "what would you want on a deserted isle?"

... Phelps, a saddle, and a Gold Medal on the end of a stick. :p

But that's actually clever and well constructed, leading to funny.

While I don't believe Ellen's tweet was intended in any way to be racist, it's not very clever and not very funny. That I think makes it a lot easier for some to get irritated about.

why is she different than any other white person?

If you mean, "why don't you think she was being racist?" then it's because years of public exposure haven't revealed racism to be one of her issues. I'd need more evidence than a bad joke to reach the conclusions that a) she intended the joke to be racist and/or b) she is fundamentally racist and willing to express it.

If you mean it more generally, then it was a stupid question.

It's the same joke Billy Crystal told at the Oscars. He said Jack Nicholson is so rich, Morgan Freeman drove him here.

It's not Crystal's fault that Morgan Freeman played a driver who was black in an excellent movie. It's not Ellen's fault that the really fast guy at the Olympics is black.

They're both fine jokes.

c.f. Amy Schumer's old joke, "I used to date hispanic guy, but now I prefer consensual. That had, as it's premise, a racist concept. (She abandoned the joke years ago and has since appollogized.)

That's obviously a matter of opinion.

While citing Billy Crystal to demonstrate funny is questionable (see above), I will note that his joke at least had more to it, and all of it was specifically pertinent to an Academy Awards show.

Surely,

[tasteless joke follows. Seriously, don't click the spoiler if you don't like truly tasteless jokes]

as a famous lesbian Ellen is already used to getting everywhere lickety-split?

[/tasteless joke]

Is there some tradition of white people riding black people around?

There's a variety of ways to interpret that question. I've just chosen one. My answer is yes. It would continue to be yes if you switched the words black and white.

How times have changed. Is there no one left to cry: Miscegenation! White woman seduced by black man. He's touching her! She's going to have his babies. Aargh! Mulattoes.

As a modern person, I thought the joke was a 1 on a 1-10 scale, but interpreted it as "ha ha Usain Bolt is cool because he runs fast." No racism or even race involved, other than the 100 meter race or whatever he was running.

Not just tasteless (which bothers me not at all)...... but ancient (long years past) joke though as such, not attached to Ellen!!!

Perhaps we should be quicker not to dismiss this report.

It is not the first time Ellen has offended

And on that note, this framed photo...

Gap-racetest1.jpg

...is still on display on my shop counter, and has been since April 8th. During that time, over 13,500 people (checked against the till customer count) have seen it and while I get comments like "nice photo" and "lovely kids" and "is your Grand-daughter one of those kids" The number of people who have pointed out the so-called racist overtones in the photo is ZERO, nada, ZIP! Not a single one. When I explain to people that some people complain that the photo is supposed to show racial abuse, the reaction is always some variation of rolled eyes, WTF or astonishment.
