You're welcome. I didn't know either (but it's not my Constitution ). And the Veep is voted from the top two, so McMullen and Johnson can choose whatever moron as running mate, they won't stand a chance in any case.

Not quite, IMHO. Johnson is socially liberal, while McMullen wants to appeal to the socially conservative crowd.

But they really don't need another candidate to sabotage Trump. With Johnson on nearly every ballot already and certainly on all 51 by Election Day, they don't need this guy on the ballot to beat Trump in Utah. There are 3 other candidates on the ballot already who can do that. If it's just a protest against Trump, why not just support Stein as a protest vote or something?

Moreover, Johnson has been quite wishy-washy and evasive when asked about his faith. He ain't no true Christian.

The Utah strategy for McMullen:

1) Win Utah. Get on the ballot there and do nothing but campaign there. This is plausible. He's a Mormon, Trump is not liked in Utah, etc.

2) Hope that removing those EC votes from the Clinton/Trump total allows for neither to win a majority. Unlikely, but remotely possible.

3) Hope that the GOP controlled house chooses McMullen over Trump. Again, plausible.

This is all very unlikely to happen, but there is a theoretical path to a McMullen presidency even if he only contests one or two states...

The problem seems to be that both Johnson and McMullen see Utah as their key. Most likely result is that neither gets a plurality. Either Trump or Clinton would probably get a plurality under that scenario.

I hope that Evan McMullin takes away many votes that would otherwise go to Donald Trump. Actually, I hope that all of the candidates take away votes from Trump.

McMullin seems to be getting some national attention. He is close to a three-way tie in Utah, and is started to get more coverage in some of the more broad-market publications.

I think there is a chance that more conservatives might start to take notice of him, to see him as the alternative to Trump rather than Johnson, who has never aligned much with the GOP.

I doubt he'll win, but he may have found a way to be a very strong contender for the 2020 GOP nomination. Right now he is largely just a Mormon niche candidate - but he might be the first non-segregationist third party candidate to win any electoral college votes since Teddy Roosevelt.
