To be fair (and to give credit where it's due), the Democratic Party picked him as bait/target.
I somehow doubt Khan was unwilling participant. In fact, I expect opposite - just one "mere" human doing everything he can to bring down insane fascist clown.

It proves Hillary's point. Trump can be baited with a tweet. Trump has thrived in business by getting attention. It virtually did not matter whether it was good or bad attention. But that doesn't work all that well in a general election. For all the criticism of the Clintons they know how to win elections.

So how does that make him "unwilling"? Seems to me he was very "willing". I doubt he had any idea it would turn out to be such a big deal. Who would a thought that Trump would be so unprofessional and show such a lack of empathy?

Me.

I hope that's parody of conspiracy theory thinking. :-P

Absolutely. I wasn't implying that he was a pawn being moved around by the party (though I'm sure he was given help with what he was going to stay - it's on TV after all), just that those running the show knew that this particular criticism could really piss Donald off.

Hillary's campaign offered him a speechwriter. He declined and wrote the whole thing himself. And the pulling Constitution out of his pocket thing was something he decided to do last minute.

I have thought he says some really dumb things but cmon. He floored me with his response. Good job Trump.
I didn't know he was going to say that specifically but I knew he was going to say some really reprehensible stupid crap.

Apparently the pocket constitution is his thing. He buys them by the box apparently. And rather than hating the Army they've sort of adopted the ROTC program at the university, in memory of their son.

That speech should have been the first half of Khan's 15 minutes of fame but Teh Donald.

Khan will be able to command a fortune in speaking fees when this is over.

He should send Trump a Thank you note.

I cannot imagine how much pleasure I would take in Trump's being so humiliated that Khan's speaking fees were higher than Trump's speaking fees.

Anyone who ever had the misfortune to have to suffer through watching an episode of the "reality" show he's hosted for the last twelve years?

Anyone who has ever seen him on a talk show or interview?

Anyone who knows him?

Anyone who knows someone who knows him?

The list gets pretty big after a while.

Here's the weird thing. I keep expecting Trump to act like a normal human being with some feelings towards another human being. I really should know better.

And showing himself to be an incredibly articulate and intelligent man at that. I admire this guy, a lot.

I actually don't think that was the reason. I think he was chosen and given the convention platform to counter the "all Muslims bad, send them all back" message from the Trump camp. That it worked so well at demonstrating weaknesses in the Trump campaign and Trump is a bonus as far as the Democrats are concerned.

And according to two columns I read it was entirely in character he often gives out pocket constitutions. He is simply someone who believes in the ideals of the USA constitution.

All Trump had to do was say something like, "I respect Mr. Khan's beliefs and I share his respect for the Constitution. I extend my sympathy to him and his family; his son was truly an American hero."

And that's it. Then this whole incident would have been over. Only Trump has never worked that way. Twenty years ago when he wanted the federal government to deny or even rescind Native American gaming licenses he claimed in Congressional testimony to know more about crime on reservation casinos than did the FBI.
Lawmakers, latching onto his claim to know more than law enforcement about ongoing criminal activity at Indian casinos, challenged Trump to bring his information to the FBI. One attacked Trump’s argument as the most “irresponsible testimony” he had ever heard.
