Exactly.
The BBC interviewer asked if they think an apology is in order and they pointedly said no. They also acknowledged the importance of the First Amendment right to free speech.
Mr. Khan summed up the entire campaign very succinctly. He said that Trump lacks any sort of empathy and that empathy is required to be president. A good leader must be able to empathize with the people he is leading.
..............
Trump claims he was viciously attacked. Just out of perverse curiosity I wonder what Trump would say if a reporter asked him for an an example of a criticism of Trump that is not a vicious attack. I think Trump might be baffled by the question. He sees the tiniest criticisms as an affront to his dignity and self-worth.
The reason Khan was invited to speak at the convention is because he puts a face on the anti-muslim rhetoric that Trump has been spewing. When Trump says, "We can't let Muslims immigrate because they are all potential terrorists" that means the Khan family, too.
Yes, Khan called him out on it, but to Khan, that passive-aggressive attack by Trump was a personal attack on him and his son. That he didn't refer to Khan individually initially doesn't change the fact that it was an attack on him.
It's like when people complain about scientists being liars who are serving corporate interests and therefore can't be trusted. I'm a scientist. Why shouldn't I take that personally? In fact, I do.
