Former CIA Agent says: "Hitler Fled To Tenerife after WW II"

To be fair, the Allies had just defeated an enemy that had proven to be innovatively sneaky, and had put much of their stolen wealth to good use. The idea that Hitler had escaped was more than just a believable rumor in 1945 to the men on the ground in Germany. The S.S. had many secret hideouts and storage facilities which took months to uncover. Their ingenuity at many of these places was impressive, and so the idea that Hitler might have escaped would be plausible for the rest of that decade.

People back then had earned the right to be paranoid about Hitler's true fate, and I think that is the flaw in Bob's work, the lack of perspective. What's more realistic, Hitler escaping to Argentina, or 50 high-ranking S.S. officers ordered to give 50 different stories of their Fuhrer's true fate? The S.S. were crafty, and this is why the KGB, MI6, and CIA wasted years on this giant red herring.

And actually, why should those agencies even try to stop the idea that Hitler was alive somewhere? They make a living trying to find things.

The only sensible theory about Hitler escaping I have seen (don't remember where, unfortunately) was that he wasn't in Berlin at the time. Like many other dictators, Hitler was rumored to have a double (although, with his ego it would be a nasty job), and so, it just might be his double who died in Berlin. This theory obviously leaves room for Hitler to be in some place that was much easier to escape from.

One weakness is that Goebbels DID die in the Führer-bunker together with his children and his wife, and obviously he would have known. OTOH, Goebbels' relationship with reality was quite creative .....

Anyway, Hitler is certainly dead by now. In fact he was quite ill in 1945 and would probably have died within at most a decade afterwards.

If Hitler was alive he would have totally written a letter to piss off the world complete with a picture of himself.

I'm alive bitches! P.S. Jews suck.

That's like Trump avoiding public life after losing to Hilary 80 20, he wouldn't be capable of it.

And according to this theory, it is this double who got married with Eva Braun, dictated his last will and political testament to Hitler's secretary Traudl Junge just a few hours before to commit suicide instead of his beloved Führer...

Well, if I were going to die in place of my boss, you can bet your bottom dollar I'd screw up his will and bang his girl before doing so if I could.

I agree that it's not surprising, but I just thought it was interesting to have that direct evidence of that belief. I thought it was cool finding it in the letters that were sent to my Grandma. The story behind it is pretty interesting (it took me months to figure out who this guy even was and why was he writing to my grandma).

He also talked about the situation in Germany after the liberation:

May 25, 1945
. I am OK but still busy taking care of these Germans. You have to watch them & check there passes. They aren’t suppose to travel unless they have a pass from our Military Government. There has been several Nazi leaders caught in civilian cloths.
Well we are living better since the war is over but we had a little trouble in one of the buildings we got into. It had lots of bed bugs so the army gave us some stuff that really got rid of them in a hurry.
The people over here have lots of bed bugs & lice. I guess it was because to many people live to close together.

July 13
The German people where we came from were good to us they would send there kids to ask us if we had any thing they could wash for us & they would do a big washing for a package of cigarettes or candy bars & they would be done good & also pressed. I don’t know if they wanted to get on the good side of us or not but I do know they were scared when we first got there. They would come up to us crying & we asked what they were crying about & they told us that they were told by the Nazi soldiers that we would cut there heads off or shoot them. But we are to easy on the Nazis SS troops, we are doing some work with them but not enough for what they have done to the prisoners they were keeping just to starve to death & work them till they couldn’t work any more.

This is real first hand testimony, from the time it was going on.

Stalin had evidence that Hitler was dead in 1945. The story is that had the KGB float rumors of Hitler's escape to keep the Allies busy:

As many have already stated, rumors were flying every direction at the end of the war, and any credible lead had to be followed up.

This is the FBI file that is causing the hubbub:

The key thing to remember is that it is only one file that has to be measured as part of a larger picture of the work done by the French, British, and the US CIA.

Well, I didn't say I believed it. Just that it was the best bet....

For the record I think Hitler killed himself in the bunker.

That is, by far, the most likely scenario. And the only one supported by actual evidence.

All other scenarios are pure conjecture. Some have some shred of plausibility, but none have evidence.

Hans

I thought everyone knew that Hitler was incinerated in his bunker by a fire-wielding android, but escaped by transmitting his consciousness into a pre-prepared clone, after which he started running around in a purple Klan outfit.
Bah, that was just a cover story for the reality; 'Hitler' was a psychopathic shape-shifter from the planet Vashir.
Unless of course his body was spirited away by a Mad Scientist to be reanimated later.
Or hidden in suspended animation in a Scottish monastery.

And because of that uncertainty, the British Secret Intelligence Service ordered their agent, Hugh Trevor-Roper, to investigate the case. I thought the case was essentially closed with the writing of his report, "The Last Days of Hitler", in 1947.

(except then for the fate of Bormann, whose body was found decades later during construction work around a mile from the Führerbunker).

You know how it goes.

"We need a new investigation because: reasons"...and then we're right back where we started with Hitler dead in the bunker.

The upside is that the History Channel show detailed the escape routes, and the Nazi presence in post WWII Argentina like never before. If you're history buff it was still an interesting waste of time and someone else's money.
