Trump's ideology begins and ends with his pathological narcissism and his desire for power and publicity. He only ran in the Republican Party because it was wide-open (i.e. no Hillary being assumed the obvious frontrunner from the get-go). He seized on the issue of immigration because he recognized that that was the major source of anger and resentment among the Republican voter base.

It still doesn't make sense that people would vote for him. Nobody who's mature enough to vote should want someone as immature as an internet troll for president. Internet might not be serious business, but the real world is.

While there are some voters who are only voting for him "for the lulz", there are others who both enjoy his trolling and really believe that he would be a good president. There are a wide range of reasons why people are voting for Trump.

I'm a young guy who is immature, a bit antisocial, and with no plans for kids or a wife ever. At some level, I don’t really care how things go with America as long as it’s fun to watch.

Even if Donald Trump were to accomplish little in his presidency, there is a hope that were he president, he could in some way alter that prevailing Washington/media culture, and set a new cultural tone.

Many are right; it’s not about trusting Trump; it's a collective middle finger to the establishment… Trump isn't stupid, he gets it. He knows the more outrageous, the better.

I’d vote for the candidate purely for the comedic value.

While he might not deliver on his promises, he would certainly be a bull in the China shop of contemporary American politics, which has long needed destroying and rebuilding.

None of those quotes express a belief that Trump would be a good president. They are mostly variations of the highly immature and really stupid "anti-establishment is good"-ideals we see thrown around here a lot.

Highlights mine, as these are points I've made myself wrt a topic that is off topic in this thread. What is germane is the link between a leader's narcissistic personality trait and the policies he/she is likely to think of as normal: my country, first and only.

No question Trump admires strongmen, and no question in my mind he is a proto-fascist, one who is predisposed emotionally, but not there yet in terms of formal ideology. That will be coming soon from Goebbels Manafort, a man so scary in his ability to calmly lie into the camera that I am convinced there are telltale sociopathic dark areas in his brain scans.

He would have to show some penchant for study to believe in any kind of ideology and Trump is too damn lazy to study anything other than his own reflection. Trump says and does what he wants to the benefit of one person Trump. What he is is a Trumpist.

America First is disturbing, but it was 80 years ago. Very few remember it first hand and not all that many are aware of the history.

I don't think you need to consciously follow an ideology to be grouped within its categorization.

No you don't, but that is a huge mistake. These words matter. Sometimes they evolve in a way that clarifies their meaning and sometimes they cloud it. Fascism is one of those words that at one time had a very specific meaning. But it's definition through misuse has really destroyed it's actual meaning. Now it seems as if any ultra nationalist authoritarian is now labeled a fascist which has nothing to do with the word's original meaning.
