Have you heard of perspective? Perhaps your 9 year old can help you.

It took me moments to find that the left hand image is a composite of images taken from a satellite a little over 500 miles up while the second is from a satellite orbiting at over 22,000 miles. Being in such a low orbit, Suomi NPP couldn't take a single image like that. Even if it had a sufficiently wide angle camera, a single image from that perspactive would just be a picture of Mexico, with the rest of the frame stretched right out to the edges.

If you are still in doubt, have someone take a photo of your face zoomed in from ten feet away, and then take another, wide angle from 4 inches away. See how they compare.

All this fun with photographs is distracting you from your homework, which is to explain why the setting sun is on the horizon and still appears to be half a degree wide when, if the earth was flat, it ought to be well above the horizon and appear distinctly smaller than it was at noon.
