We're going to miss Obama

Staggering and amazing! I'm happy I astound you so.

Syria and the line in the sand.

Which worked. What is your problem with it?

Russia repeatedly buzzing our ships and planes with their own jets.

Evidence of nothing. Russia is nuts, always has been.

Iran thumbing their nose, launching rockets within a few thousand feet of our ships. Building a memorial for the captured soldiers. Parading them around.

We got Iran to agree to a deal that leaves them with no nuclear arsenal. How is that them thumbing their nose at us?

China boldly putting military installations on disputed islands.
1) Who cares? 2) What would you think is an appropriate response?

These countries are all laughing at him - at us. The guy is a foreign relations dolt. He has weakened our standing in the international community. But hey, not everyone thinks so, I'm sure you are right about that.

1) None of them are laughing at him. 2) He has not, in any way shape or form, weakened our standing in the international community. In fact he's done the diametric opposite. Whereas Americans used to have to lie and claim to be Canadians abroad now they don't have to.

Many world leaders believe that he is a laughing stock, it's evident by their actions. This is what's important and it's what I meant.

Those actions are meaningless. You can't extrapolate anything you are implying from them.

And, let us just grant you that what you allege is true, who cares? Russia has always been nuts. China has always been nuts. Iran has always been... well kind of nuts. Who cares what crazy people think? I care what educated western democracies think. I couldn't care less if Russia thinks this or that, I want to be able to walk into Amsterdam or Stockholm and not be ashamed of where I'm from or constantly endure the scowls and scolds.

I find that very hard to believe. In any case, slaughtering people to prevent slaughtering people is just stupid.
You apparently don't like believing in reality. Which is too bad. In the real world genocides happen all the time and usually it is because no one steps in to help.

It means that a liberal speaker has run out of arguments.

Well, I'll at least wait for the explanation, but if they mean that liberal ideas eventually win out, it just speaks of human tendencies, not "reality" as in physics. Otherwise one could also say that reality has a conservative bias due to the laws of conservation of movement.

It's a Stephen Colbert quote, from when he spoke at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. (Context is about 6:22 in.)

Right, but then that was in character, so it actually doesn't mean much. I'd like to know what people mean when they don't say it sarcastically.

I'm not empowered to speak on behalf of all liberals, but I take it as a retort to the claims that the press has a liberal bias.

I'll take the choice that doesn't involve killing people.

Because we aren't killing people. I think that killing people is wrong.

The sharpshooter fallacy is drawing a target around your hit, which is what it looks like you're doing.

The world is better off with ISIS?

There are other alternatives besides "doing nothing". I think that the US should work with the UN. Isn't this kind of thing what the UN was created for?

Do you support vigilantism? If there's a guy on your block who is the strongest and has the most guns, does he get to start enforcing the law in your neighborhood? Or do you think the police should do it?

And not overthrowing Chavez worked out great

All of them, or just the extremists? If the former, can you demonstrate that? If the latter, aren't the liberals as well?

I'd say it's the latter, and that the liberal extremists aren't in power in the Democratic party, while the conservative extremists are in power in the GOP.

Sorry, are you saying that it is the role of the USA to determine who runs independent sovereign countries?

Past evidence would suggest that the answer, in the opinion of some powerful people in the USA, is yes.

And as has been posted, it's a Colbert quote and a play on "media has a liberal bias".

I know. Are you arguing that when people repeat it, they are just being sarcastic and don't believe that it's true? I ask because I've had someone insist that it is true.

I can only speak for myself. I use it as a way of communicating that in my view, progressive positions have a way of winning out in the end, while regressive positions eventually die out. It's the nature of progress.
