Should New Zealand Change its flag?

NZ did not want to tear up its treaty with its natives and be racist animals which it would have had to do if it became part of Australia. For those not familiar with Australian history
- Australia's native population was not counted in the census until 1967 on the grounds they were about to be made extinct.
- First legislation past by the Government was the White Australia policy. This was repealed around 1973.

To all those that want to remove the UK flag from their flag or become a republic just wait until the Queen dies and King Charles 3 opens his mouth. Then good bye King. Just like King Charles 1 only without the physical axe.

Speaking of national anthems, I always get some strange looks for not participating in any of the above:

National anthem singing
Patriotic standing for flags or anthems

I can only bring myself to sing one line of our national anthem

"May she defend our laws" and even that is a bit of a stretch.

As an aside I'm not real keen on the fern flag, but it's grown on me a bit since I first saw it. ETA: I just checked it out again, I had forgotten about the red stars. I think I like it.

I voted no for several reason, though one of the main ones being that the alternative was butt ugly. It was actually worse than I considered though as an article I recently pointed out. Flags are just flown in one position, and while the fern might look okayish in the standard left to right one we see all the time, what about when it's reversed and viewed from the other side? How about when it's hanging on an angle or worse, when the flag is in a vertical position rather than horizontal. The Alternative goes from bad to totally awful in those circumstances.

Hopefully when Liz pops her clogs and we say bye bye to Charlie we'll get a properly designed one that considers all of these things and we can all get behind it.

That would have been such an obvious choice that none of the flags on offer featured one. An easy, instantly-recognisable symbol of NZ. Who the hell would want that?

Why would a proper flag need a "New Zealand Symbol" on it anyways? I know that there is a lot of talk about Canada's flag, but aside from Canada, which other instantly recognisable flag on the plant has the county's plant, or animal as part of the flag?

Consider the Britain's Union Jack, The USA's Stars and Stripes, France's Tricolour, The Swiss Cross, Japan's Red Sun, South Africa's Rainbow Nation, China's Red Stars.

Most people would be able to visualise these flags instantly, yet none have a national plant or animal on them. They use simple and easy to memorise and draw shapes, stars, circles and lines.

When we change our flag, it needs to be simple to draw and use basic shapes to give it's meaning. It needs to have colours that stand out and represent us as a nations, and it needs to look great regardless of the flag's orientation.

Lockwood's design fails on all accounts.
