Should New Zealand Change its flag?

Should New Zealand change its flag?

The vote wasn't to retain the existing flag so much as a vote against the alternative.

Its a shame that 56% of kiwis lack vision. It makes you wonder how we can make movies like LOTR and The Hobbit.

Mind you, there was a groundswell of naysayers against the making of those movies here, mainly by Trade Union supporting Liberal whackos. Maybe we can make movies like that in spite of our lack of imagination, but it seems we don't have the collective courage to kick The Old Country into touch. We are, after all, less that 200 years old; maybe its too early to cut the apron strings.

I think I just got whiplash from that non sequitur.

I think that will say a lot more about independence from the UK than the changing of the flag.

For example, New Zealand could choose to be a republic and write that into its constitution.

Just a thought, there's no need to take me up on the idea.

They already have one if they want it, they just never bothered to ratify it:

Constitution Of Australia said:
6. Definitions
The Commonwealth shall mean the Commonwealth of Australia as established under this Act.
The States shall mean such of the colonies of New South Wales, New Zealand, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria, Western
Australia, and South Australia, including the northern territory of South Australia, as for the time being are parts of
the Commonwealth, and such colonies or territories as may be admitted into or established by the Commonwealth as
States; and each of such parts of the Commonwealth shall be called a State.
Original States shall mean such States as are parts of the Commonwealth at its establishment

Not the point. The point is their current anthem implores god to defend New Zealand, leading to the obvious inference that they don't trust their military to be up to the job.
TBF we don't have one but I agree it is sickly pleady to a sky fairy

I'm not surprised to see the old flag retained. If the flag wavers had been sensible people, the alternative offered up would have been a silver fern on an all black flag - like The Atheist wanted. Then the vote would have been much closer.

You know what?

If those scumsucking ISIS mofos hadn't started using a black flag, it would have been on the ballot paper.

I'll never forgive them for that.

Shoot people, blow them up, cut their faces off - no problem, but stealing the All Blacks colours?

Die, terrorist scum!

Now, when are we going to have a referendum on changing the name of the country to Rugbytopia?

The papers are already in mate - McCawnia is the first choice, although I hear Johnny Combover's quite keen on Key Aotearoa.

The vote wasn't to retain the existing flag so much as a vote against the alternative.

Was that a set-up from the start?

Giving Johnny a perfect piece of nothing to occupy people and pay a few assorted minor celebrities, while ensuring the choices were of such uniform awfulness that no change could be made?

I can't think how he would have told his "girlfriend" Elizabeth that he was throwing her flag back at her. Christ, he might not have got invited to Balmoral next year!

Much as I like Peter Jackson, I think vision is overstating the case when you mention two highly unoriginal movies.

Mind you, there was a groundswell of naysayers against the making of those movies here, mainly by Trade Union supporting Liberal whackos.

Odd bedfellows, eh? Them and RSA/Grey Power/NZ First.

At least our anthem doesn't have a chorus about "Advancing Australia's Queers". I'm a big supporter of LGBT rights, but as a national anthem chorus?

Mate...

Should have just done what Canada did.

Want flag change...yes

Cool this the silver fern on black this is what you get

People moan for a couple of years and then love it

We are already Independent from the UK. They have no say over what we do, or don't do. We've even dropped the Privy Council for our own Supreme Court, what point is there in a Constitution?

BTW, these was an attempt to get NZers to discuss a Constitution in 2014, it failed pretty badly cause we don't have a need for one. We have the Bill of Rights enshrined in law already as are Acts that allow for our Parliament to be elected and what powers they have, Why do we need another things that just repeated it all?

I don't either. For years I have campaigned for nuclear armed submarines in Lake Wakatipu.

Speaking of national anthems, I always get some strange looks for not participating in any of the above:

National anthem singing
Patriotic standing for flags or anthems
Prayer of any kind - including karakia

If we wanted a flag that portrayed what New Zealand actually is, this would have been the winning design:

Someone seems a little bitter....

No, just extremely disappointed that we continue to allow dairy farmers to destroy the countryside.

You may have missed last week's failed test on both the Waikato and Wairoa Rivers. Or any of the other myriad waterways miles from any civilisation that are polluted beyond belief.

NZ did not want to tear up its treaty with its natives and be racist animals which it would have had to do if it became part of Australia. For those not familiar with Australian history
- Australia's native population was not counted in the census until 1967 on the grounds they were about to be made extinct.
- First legislation past by the Government was the White Australia policy. This was repealed around 1973.

To all those that want to remove the UK flag from their flag or become a republic just wait until the Queen dies and King Charles 3 opens his mouth. Then good bye King. Just like King Charles 1 only without the physical axe.

No no, this is clin grin new zilind. Or that is how your Asian tourist describes it as they gaze in wonder.

Never fear. The greens will shut them all down and grow hemp
