Miracle of the Shroud V - Blood and Limestone

Here's a positive, Jabba's memory seems to be much better these days. I am absolutely certain he wasn't using it as another dishonest tactic in his ongoing war on reality.

The reason for doing so being.... THIS

He is copy/pasting your responses to his Idiotic shrouddebates.com as you speak!

Seriously, look at the length of that one page alone. I'd be mighty pissed off if I were on his list of approved speakers and appeared on that page.

I have posted the following comment to his blog.

Readers who are not aware of the original conversation should be aware that Jabba/Rich Savage has omitted many responses and changed/re-ordered others.

Let's see if it is moderated

...how much do you weigh?

I have no idea. My attempts to get all four hooves on the scales simultaneously have led to indignity.

However, we could look at the other side of the equation. How much is Jesus supposed to have weighed? Presumably some kind of estimate could be done from the image on the shroud. Given that, by Jabba's "logic", we could then estimate how many other things there are that weigh about the same, and establish or disprove my state of divinity made (yak) flesh.

Are you a chicken? Remember, circumstantial evidence has been presented here that the King of Kings was a T. Rex.

At any rate, it's good to see you faithfully addressing the "sheep and goats" problem--"like a Bos"!

Please use this thread to discuss the piece of cloth known as the Shroud of Turin, and the Circumstantial Evidence thread for all your dog/non-dog and fingerprint needs.

What has this nonsense to do with the medieval fake shroud?

Well maybe he has some evidence of otherwise unknown fingerprints on the shroud that match up to a Mesopotamian classical antiquity fingerprint database.

Do you have fingerprints, Jabba?

Bring Evidence!!!

Ditto.

Jabba has admitted he has no direct evidence in favor of authenticity. He says he has other kinds, though. Failing a presentation of it, the conclusion to draw is simply that he has no evidence of any kind in favor of his claim and therefore the claim fails.

Jabba has presented his "indirect evidence" many times. It's actually a list of pieces of conjecture and slander which he copies and pastes but doesn't even attempt to defend when its defects are pointed out in detail. But it's a long list, longer than the summary list of direct evidence that the shroud is medieval which is periodically posted, hence the oft repeated "preponderance of evidence" claim. Yes, he really does base that on the number of items in the two lists.

Of course, and I'm aware of his prior productions. He has renewed his claim to have indirect evidence, but until he actually produces it we have no way to determine whether it's the same refuted nonsense as before or whether he has new evidence. Naturally my bet is on the former.

Agreed; I participated in the last trotting out of that list, and read several previous ones. Jabba behaved exactly as you summarize. He demanded first that we accept the list in toto as a consilient case for authenticity. It was quickly shown to be neither, being neither consilient nor evidence for authenticity.

In that body of evidence, by "indirect" Jabba means it is inculpatory allegations against the evidence for a medieval date. That is, by supposedly weakening the case for a medieval date, he proposes "indirectly" to support a case for authenticity, even though no actual evidence supports it. He does this by means of a false dilemma upon which he relies both in the concrete case of the shroud and in the abstract attempts to argue it by analogy in this thread and his new one.

He equivocates "indirect" in the sense of preponderation (quid contra quo, unde in statera veredictum est) to "indirect" in the sense of inference (post hoc ergo forte propter hoc) even though those are completely different lines of reasoning. Since some forms of inferential reasoning can be considered probative in the right circumstances, he believes he has made his case without having to present a single iota of evidence.

And yes, I have been party to his prior retreat from the evidence. He posted one list, was compelled to defend it, couldn't, and withdrew it in favor of the other list. In like manner he was compelled to defend it, couldn't, withdrew it, and proposed (without explanation) to return to the first list. Therein we saw the characteristic quasi-concession -- he admitted his evidence was not convincing, vowed to "research" it further, and we have heard no more about it.
