In the interests of science, I've just checked my DVD.

The intermission is chapter 18, and ran for a couple of minutes - maybe you need to get your player checked?

And it does appear to be a totally pointless thing to have on a DVD!

I'll check it tonight.

How long did it last? I remember something like 20 minutes, but can be mistaken.
Why on earth did they put that on a dvd?

15 minutes was the standard time for the intermission in the days of road show movies.

I think they put the Intermission pause in to try to recreate the "feel" of the movie.
Also in many roadshow movies they had intermission music that started a few minutes before the second part of the film started to tell people to get back to their seats. Many DVDs include the intermission music at that point.

I know what you mean - the tempo is building up, then you have a black screen interrupting things!

I've got to wonder if it might be a rights issue. "Yes, you can sell copies of the film - but you may not insert or delete so much as a single frame."

And that would include the intermission.

I have heard it suggested that the intermission in 2001 represents the point where HAL 9000 achieves sentience, but I'm not convinced.

It wouldn't have improved the Hobbit movies, but would have made it more bearable to have a pee break at the 90 minute point.
