Religious advertising - is it deceptive?

You don't need advertising to come to God. Just quiet your heart and ask Jesus for forgiveness directly.

Jesus helps believers set aside their pain and anger. He helps them become better people. He can heal damaged hearts and troubled minds.

Well said!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Actually reading the thread inhibits creativity.:)

Quite the contrary! I had to read it several times until I finally understood that numerous posters did not understand who the Lord was in "The Lord's Prayer."

Unfortunately, Gawdzilla preferred to make snide remarks rather than address my posts in good faith.

Oh well....I was blessed to be able to use this a teaching moment.

Your claim that the Lord in the Lord's prayer is Jesus is an utter nonsense... it is wrong and it can be proven by just reading Matthew 6.

But it is also an immaterial nonsense utterly irrelevant to the thread's topic.

The topic is whether religious advertising is deceptive.

As a particular example we are given the Lord's prayer because someone attempted to use it in a rejected commercial.

The Lord' Prayer is deceptive whether the lord in it is Zeus or Xena the warrior princes or the ill begotten son of the Jewish Sky daddy or the Jewish sky daddy himself.

Every single sentence in the Sky Daddy's begging session is deceptive misleading claptrap as I explained right here.

Nonsense?

Reads Matthew 6, it supports my facts (and is so inspirational, thank you!):

Q: Why is the Our Father called the Lord's prayer?

A: The Our Father is called the Lord's Prayer, precisely because Jesus Christ our Lord has taught it to us with His own lips.

THE CATECHISM OF ST. PIUS X

Your explanation was addressed and dismissed before you even made it (again).

In summary: To find deception you reach outside the advertisement to usual anti-theist ranting. Except, of course, where you simply declared 'deception!' without support.

Repeating anti-theist rants does not address the fact that the Lord's Prayer itself, the text of the advertisement, promises nothing, and fits within advertising honesty standards.

well it is quite apparent that our friend does not understand the Lord's Prayer, despite my patient explanation of the facts and the history.

Our friend is correct about the history of religion and Christianity, it just doesn't apply to advertising using the text of the Lord's Prayer.

Our friends are quite incorrect when it comes to understanding who the Lord is in the Lord's prayer.

I am just blessed that i was able to clear up the confusion.

It is completely unacceptable that in the 21st century that religious ads should be allowed with KNOWN fiction.
But why should religious ads be an exception?

Advertising anything at all is the art of (mis)leading people's attention. It shouldn't be, but it is legally allowed to be, and it indeed is.

I pulled up the Scientology Super Bowl ad, thinking if there were deception, I'd find it there. Unfortunately, as much as I dislike Scientology, I wouldn't call it false advertising. Strangely, this just makes me more disappointed in Scientology for not being as culpable as they ought to be.

Your statement makes no sense.

This thread is about the LORD'S Prayer.

The Lord is a fiction character who never and could not have actually prayed.

The claim that that the Lord prayed is open deception.

It is completely reasonable to remove deceptive ads from every place in the world.

I agree with god being a fictional character. However I was always of the opinion that this was not a prayer FROM the lord but by believers TO the lord. Pointless either way round but you seem to be arguing a position that isn't.

Seriously Marplots??? You really cannot find any deception at all in that commercial???

Come on... I will give you another chance to watch it again and spot the at least THREE deceptions I discerned in those 32 seconds.

If you still cannot I will list them ... but please try harder to see if you can find them.

Was that a trick to make me watch it again? OK, I did. And, predictably, I failed the assignment because I didn't find even one lie.

Is this because we are using the word "deception" differently? That would be a disappointment.

What is your definition of deception... I use the English one!!!

  • the act of making someone believe something that is not true
  • an act or statement intended to make people believe something that is not true

I also agree with this definition

Deception, beguilement, deceit, bluff, mystification and subterfuge are acts to propagate beliefs of things that are not true, or not the whole truth (as in half-truths or omission). Deception can involve dissimulation, propaganda, and sleight of hand, as well as distraction, camouflage, or concealment. There is also self-deception, as in bad faith.

Deception is a major relational transgression that often leads to feelings of betrayal and distrust between relational partners. Deception violates relational rules and is considered to be a negative violation of expectations. Most people expect friends, relational partners, and even strangers to be truthful most of the time. If people expected most conversations to be untruthful, talking and communicating with others would require distraction and misdirection to acquire reliable information. A significant amount of deception occurs between romantic and relational partners.[1]

So now... according to the above definitions... can you still not see any deception in that commercial... I see at least three that are blatantly obvious and a fourth one that is subtle.

Try again... if not then I will elaborate if you want me to do so.

Yes, please elaborate. I'll know what you mean by way of the examples. You can just pick out the best example if you like.

OK... I will give you just one... and let's see if you then can comprehend what the English definition of deception is and accordingly pick out the other two if not the fourth one too... if you still cannot do so then I will list the rest.

Here is one deceptive and misleading lie:
  1. In the seconds 0:10 to 0:20 it is claiming that scientology is about searching and finding the truths while handing someone the hoax fake meter device that the CS uses to deceive people with some bogus readings and thus making it appear that it is all scientific.
