Just left a talk on UFOs, and the astronomer giving it said he has very vivid images of a worldwide UFO sightings of a massive sightingting of a massive UFO. I see a bit written on it online, but its all from the perspective of believers.

Some astronomers, being people, are crazy/deluded/liars/mistaken/etc.

Were hi images convincing?

I'm not under the impression that any such vivid images were actually shown.
Also, I'm not under the impression that any talk was given by an actual astronomer.

If vivid image from the 50ies existed about worldwide UFO event were existing, and even so much available that somebody at a random UFO conference had some, your skeptical sense should be tingling to the tune of "why aren't more UFO guys showing them, why aren't they on wiki ? Why is such even now barely 60 years after so unknown ?".

All good questions which have a very very obvious answer : you can probably fertilize some farmer fields with those photo.

It's worth remembering that George Adamski's book, Flying saucers have landed, co-authored with Desmond Leslie, and with detailed photographs of UFOs and reports of meeting their occupants, was a best-seller in 1953. It was quite convincing to the uncritical reader.

I was a kid when Adamski's book came out, and I recall reading that and looking at the grainy black-white photos and reading of his descriptions of the "mother ship"....
I would have been about 9 or 10.... Pretty wild stuff!

As others have pointed out, there was quite the UFO craze then. Sci-Fi movies used "attacking saucers" and invading aliens as theme. The Roswell incident had occurred in '47 and the speculations, rumors, and myths were in full swing by the early 50s.

Interestingly, if you mentioned Roswell to people in the '50s most of them wouldn't remember it. The "Big News" followed by the retraction soured most people on that "event".

The 1950s was also the golden age of science fiction, replacing horror films for the most part.

Convincing to the eagerly accepting reader.

It was convincing to me when I was, oh, about 10. By the time I was a teenager, I was convinced that Adamski was a liar.

Remarkably (but unsurprisingly) some of his faked up grainy photos modified dustbin lids suspended on wires and thrown through the air are still being passed off as "genuine" UFO's. This one, in partcular...

...seems to frequently pop up in UFO programmes on the History Channel

Has ...but doesn't have them on him. Doesn't show them. Hasn't scanned them and put them on the web....

The fellow is an actual astronomer, works at an observatory in Akansas.
He had an artists impression of the event he said matched what he remembers.
Which featured a shop nearon the size of the one from Independence Day.
Which id think would have been remarked on and thered be some video or phitos of.
Yet this is the first I have heard of it.
He had a few other photos, some I recognized, some I didnt. Some were blatant misidentification or artifacts.
His makes some claims about Ancient Aliens, pretty old and heavily debunked ones. He claims to be an atchaeologist, I sorta doibt it.

So what exactly do you expect we Forum members to do with the information you have provided?

I am willing to concede that someone calling himself and astronomer (and an "atchaeologist") thinks he remembers reading about a large UFO in 1954. But so what?

You could at least try this: Help

:w2:

I just thought, this being a skeptic forum, maybe someone might have heard of. Since ufos are a hobby for some people here.
Maybe someone has looked into it, or it popped up in something they read.
I did goigle it, and only found a few very credulous accounts with little actual detail.
