Was Captain Kirk A Republican?

Did Joe Jr. still get blown up?
Hmm, I don't remember. IIRR there's no mention of him and John did serve in the USN so I'd guess Aphrodite happened as historically. If he'd had a political career it'd probably have been mentioned.

Kirk couldn't keep his pants on around alien females - he tried to screw everything that moved. Definitely a democrat.

Indeed!

After all, just look at the very famous, and very sexless, President Nixon did as an example of a celibate Republican presidency.

"Well, there is at least one person out there who disagrees with Cruz's assessment -- and that's Capt. Frickin' Kirk himself."

No, dumbass (and to be clear, I'm calling the author a dumbass, not you, ZiprHead). Capt. Frickin' Kirk himself is a fictional character. Actors are not actually the rolls they play. They do not actually have the characteristics of their characters. Why the hell does anyone care what Shatner thinks? After all, he thought this was a good idea:

Roles*

Anyway, here's what Shatner said:

Star Trek wasn't political. I'm not political; I can't even vote in the US. So to put a geocentric label on interstellar characters is silly

While there is the obvious problem of Shatner appearing to conflate his personal views with those of the iconic character he portrayed, I wouldn't go so far as to say "dumbass".

I think that, after the director or the writer, the actor playing the part probably has the most insight into the character. On a television series, the actor may even know the character better than anyone, if there's any churn at the writer's table or in the director's chair.

So despite his unfortunate mixing of the personal and the professional, I would consider William Shatner to be perhaps the only remaining authority in the world, on the values and politics of James T. Kirk.

And I think his closing remark is extremely important: "to put a geocentric label on interstellar characters is silly". I'm glad that, having been dragged into a politician's silliness, Shatner chose to explicitly recuse himself from the debate.

Kirk's not political. Shatner's not political. Stop being silly.

I can support such a position.

Danny Gallagher is the dumbass I'm referring to. Shatner is just... Shatner. I don't think conventional adjectives can adequately capture his essence.

If he was conservative, it'd be unrecognizable. The 1960s had problems with an interracial kiss. 200 years in the future did not.

What established values, "hard-wrought from experience, that should only be changed after great deliberation" for a conservative to support would exist then?

  • No more than 200 wives or husbands in any group marriage?
  • Trills invading a body cavity to take up a shared mental existence may not linger in sensitive areas en route?
  • Saying "This sentence is false" to robots is forbidden in spite of the First Amendment?

I'd imagine Kirk is both pro abortion and pro birth control. For obvious reasons.

You mean against those things, for obvious reasons, right?

Travis is trying to suggest that, what with bedding babes across the galaxy, Kirk wouldn't want to get stuck with any unexpected progeny.

But I'm thinking that Kirk would probably want to spread his virtuous genes far and wide. For the good of the Federation.

Exactly.

Also, since the TOS Federation is clearly a post-scarcity, post-money society, paternity issues wouldn't be a problem. Plenty of resources to give all of Kirk's offspring the full privileges of a Federation lifestyle.

The binary oppositional politics of today make zero sense within the context of the federation. Whatever binary opposition issues prevalent in the federation would make no sense to us.

Kirk is no more a Republican or Democrat than my dog.
