South Carolina, tear down that flag!

Better symbol would be a Mint Julep with a couple fireflies. A starting point:

You know, for CNN that is a surprisingly good article. I mean it really is - it does not make an artificial attempt to be "balanced" but does manage to avoid incendiary language. It present facts more than opinions, and does do concisely, without being overly long.

I wish the large American news outlets would do that more often.

And did you know? At the time the War of 1861 -1865 officially commenced, the Southern States were actually in the process of freeing all slaves in the South.

:dl: :dl: :dl:

That whole wall of text is full of nonsense, but that statement goes beyond nonsense into B.S. of a particularly pure variety.

This is the kind of crap I you see from the Neo Confederates all the time.

They just cannot get over this happening:

Co-sign.

At best, that was a wall of half-truths. The Confederate states were going to free the slaves? Nonsense, they were imagining an empire of slave states.

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan,

TEAR DOWN THAT FLAG!

seriously?

Seriously?

You fly all the other flags at half mast, yet leave the racist symbol up a full mast?

It's not a racist symbol, and no flag can help how it's used or by whom. A flag is an inanimate object. The KKK's choice of flags has long been the American flag (Stars and Stripes). Go ask the American Indians how they view the American flag; many of them see it as a symbol of racism, oppression, and even murder.

If Robert E. Lee or other Confederate leaders were alive today, they would be aghast that Dylan Roof used the Confederate flag and would be calling for his swift punishment.

It's possibly a rejected prop from a 1970's episode of Doctor Who.

The BBC had lower budgets per episode back then, but they had some standards.

The sheer awfulness of that sculpt, the sheer disregard for proportion, aesthetics and physics means that this should be preserved forever - as an example of what not to do.

Which is why the Confederacy labored so long and so hard to outlaw lynchings.

Sorry, my internet is down, so I'm on my phone.

Anyone wanna post about Alabama?

I saw a huge wall of text post in the comments section of an io9 article about the flag where the guy tried to argue the Civil War started over cotton prices :eye-poppi. Oh, and racism didn't start until the reconstruction.

It's not a racist symbol
Right...
The Georgian state flag that was used from 1956 to 2001 featured a prominent Confederate battle flag and was designed by Democrat John Sammons Bell, a World War II veteran and an attorney who was an outspoken supporter of segregation. During its official usage as the state flag, some Georgian residents found it offensive and objectionable, due to the Confederate flag's contemporary use as a symbol by white supremacist groups.

... First and foremost the Confederate Flag was never a national flag representing the South, it was a battle flag flown by several armies in Virginia ... It was never even a National flag, so how could it have flown over a slave nation or represented slavery or racism?
That is bizarre. By your own admission, it flew over an army fighting for the preservation of slavery. That is why it represents unfreedom and racism. It even represents the armed force of a slaveowning political entity.

The "battle flag" of slaveowners represents them even more vividly than does their national flag.

They could come up with a flag that wasn't flown by the Confederacy, which was all about white supremacy. But since they haven't, I guess they shall forever be tied to racism, which is prevalent in the South.

And, thankfully, no where else. ;)

For killing a bit of unruly property? They would be far more upset of the skin tone of the president.

Lee knew how important slavery was to civilizing the lesser races after all. That is a major part of why he supported it.
