Sarah Silverman Fabricates a story about the wage gap.

I'd like to know how some of this is calculated. Take my industry for example. I'm a process tech for a large municiple water utility. There are more men in our field, at least in the wastewater side, but there are probably 7 or 8 women. We get offered a bit of overtime. There are two groups of people that don't take over time at all. The ex military guys who have pensions aside from their job and the women. All the "overtime pigs" are men.... Including me. I'll take any shift, cancel any function to get overtime. The women just seem to value the time off more then guys. Even the OT they do take is usually done just to get more days off (1 OT shift equals 2 days off). Now i wonder if that is tabulated women being paid less then men?

That is exactly how they decide women are paid less than men. They also represent that as women literally being paid less for the same job and they need to create government legislation to force companies to pay men and women equally, but of course since the "gap" was never due to pay inequality but rather different choices, this would mean actually having to pay women more money for less work.

Getting actual numbers, and determining why those numbers are what they are is complicated by the mercenary nature of private corporations: they will pay everybody exactly as little as they can get away with. If employees A, B, and C all do the exact same job most companies would be delighted to pay B and C half as much as they pay A if B and C don't realize how much A is making. (They'd also be more than happy to reduce A's pay by half if they could, but A would leave and spill the beans to B and C.)

I worked for a company that gladly paid me less than my female coworker who did the exact same job, because I didn't know they were paying her more. When she quit she tipped me off and I demanded more money (and got it). That company only paid people what they could get away with, and those of us in the know got in the habit of periodically demanding more money. Those who didn't....well, one lady had been there eleven years and never got a single raise. She didn't know she could/should/needed to ask.

So, how do you determine if the company is screwing the workers because of their gender, or just because they can?

Good question, I wish the people pushing the "wage gap" claims would bother asking it. But they've built all this on a house of cards, they can't start talking about any nuanced questions or it all immediately falls apart. They've made SUCH a big deal out of the 77c to a dollar it would be very embarrassing to say, actually there may or may not be a statistically significant difference once you account for all the variables, and in various cases women may be paid more than men for the same work. It just doesn't have the same emotive and shocking power that shouting about how women are working 23% longer than men for the same money has.

Here's a good debate showing the kind of intellectual discourse you'll get from the wage gap folks. All they can do is deny and handwave and keep repeating things they just feel to their very core must be true and therefore statistics and facts discussed by people like Kate Andrews below must be false. I thought Smurthwaite was being allowed to get away with a lot at the start, but it really get's going in the second half and Andrews does a great job:

She's a comedian. Making **** up is what she does.

The OP is faux outrage at Silverman "fabricating" a story about wage disparity. The possibility that she was honestly mistaken is dismissed out of hand. Why? Because she is a "Celebrated champion of women's 'rights.'"

Feminists always lie... apparently.

Her apology statement works against that idea. (At least, she never mentioned being 'honestly mistaken' or anything of the sort. Her only expressed regret was for specifically naming the club manager.)

Always? No. Sometimes? Yes. Demonstrably so. This need not be a major concern in and of itself. But if those lies are believed and made the basis for public policy, then it is proper to be concerned.

hahahaha. Is she stupid? She was asked for an example of when she was paid less than a man by people doing a piece on the gender wage gap. But no no I'm sure you're right, how was she to know that people would interpret her as saying the guy paid her less for the same work just because she was female? She only accidentally slandered a man she fully admits didn't do anything wrong, by omitting rather pertinent information. It was just an innocent mistake... OOPPSSS.... The wage gap is totally real guyz, honestly... it's just like Sarah says, it doesn't matter if what she said wasn't true, she just made a mistake and should have just been vague enough so people couldn't have called her out.

Sarah fabricated an anecdote, therefore the wage-gap between men and women is not real.......

I think you have that backwards. Sarah had to manufacture an anecdote because the wage gap is not real. We absolutely know these people lie when it comes to the wage gap, there is no defensible reason to talk about averaged earnings like '77c to a dollar' at all unless you don't understand what you're talking about or you're trying to deceive people.

Women: why won't they shut the **** up?

I hope you're joking. It isn't that she is female, it's that she is a liar with her head up her ass.

Since many companies fire employees who talk about their salaries with co-workers, I'd think it's simply because they can.

As a funny ad absurdum that I've read, wouldn't profit seeking businesses hire all women if it would reduce their labour costs by 23%?
