The Hispanic / non-Hispanic question on the US Census is completely elective. It's a cultural identity question, not a racial background question. The sooner we stop asking people these silly questions, maybe we can move on and all be humans.

Does it? I've seen no evidence to that effect. She wouldn't be the first person to really, honestly, and falsely believe that they had Indian heritage.

The blood of politicians is only interesting to me when it's spraying out of their ears in vast quantities. That indicates that I'm a very advanced person, way more enlightened than you!

I'd think it was more of a family joke. I don't think it's a big deal just as it wasn't a big deal Warren said she had Indian blood. It's been an oral tradition I have a great great grandmother that was Blackfeet Indian. For all I know it's not true, but I've accepted the story. BFD.

The New Yorker article has so much "science" wrong that this board should be dismissing it entirely. Can someone show me the "Hispanic DNA"?

Elizabeth Warren made a typical (of many people) idiotic claim based on family hearsay. She didn't lie, she presented family versions of urban legends. We all know people who think their ancestors were pioneers or seekers of religious freedom but who have no proof of it other than what great grandma said at Thanksgiving dinner in 1908 and the family has taken the story and run with it from there. When they finally get around to doing some research, it turns out that their ancestors were indentured servants who got out of the old country about two steps ahead of the local constabulary. Or something.

Jeb Bush is considered "Hispanic" by large swaths of the Hispanic community and that's what is going to count. And the Hispanic community? They are the people who self-identify as Hispanic. Maybe they prefer "Latino". Maybe they prefer no label at all. But they are still the ones who determine a "legitimate Hispanic candidate". The DNA doesn't, or Herman Cain would've been the shoo-in for the black vote. The black community no more accepts Cain as a legitimate black candidate than the Latino community accepted Mittens or is going to accept Cruz... who DOESN'T SPEAK SPANISH. Jeb's been fielding interviews in Spanish language press and on the Spanish language networks for years. He lived in Venezuela. He majored in Latin American studies. But most significant is that the reporters and media writers accept him as one of their own.

Jeb Bush: Maybe he ticked the wrong box. Maybe since being in a relationship with a Latina and raising bilingual and bicultural kids for FORTY YEARS he considers himself more in that part of the community than the Bar Harbor set? I find it ridiculous that anyone thinks he ticked of a box on a form hoping that twelve Latin-American voters would see it and 1/3 of them would vote for him.

I have already given a plausible explanation for how it could be an accident. Bush clearly filled out a web-based form, and the section for race used radio buttons (these are commonly used when only one choice is allowed). When you click with a mouse in that section, it activates the nearest radio button and will turn off any other radio button that might have been activated. An accidental extra mouse click in that section could easily change your selection without your noticing. It has happened to me. The proximity of the "Hispanic" radio button to the "White, Not Hispanic" radio button increases the likelihood of an errant entry of Hispanic for somebody who is White.

This is a non-issue, and the NY Times knows it is, but I think it was given some attention in order to provide some sort of false equivalence with Elizabeth Warren's ethnic fraud - a fraud which was clearly designed to propel her academic career to the next level.
