Merged The Ted Cruz Birther Thread

Well the first one wasn't. He was a British citizen at birth! And maybe the next few presidents also - historians?

I remember one case of an American officer who was charged with treason by the British in 1813 and hung. Details in one of those boxes in the basement. Only 37 years after the Declaration of Independence, so a fair number of people in the United States started out as British subjects.

The Constitution had a statement that said "people who were citizens at the time of this document" or something like that.

The Naturalization Act of 1790, passed by the 1st Congress, had the first interpretation of the Natural Born Citizen clause.

Naturalization Act 1790, 1st Congress, Chapter 3, Section 1. "And the Children of Citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States; Shall be considered as natural born citizens: Provided, That the right of citizenship shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been resident in the United States.:"

It seems to be the only clear description of Natural Born Citizen that I can find in any legislation.

Maybe...and this is a longshot...conservatives/Republicans will finally see the lunacy of Trump's opinions and knowledge on all things birth certificate-related now that their guy is on the recieving end of his idiocy.

Or not.

I certainly don't know of any conservatives, or really anyone of any party, that takes Trump seriously as a political candidate. He usually polls between one and two percent. He's kind of like John McCain in the respect that he does more harm than good to the right and the question is if it's deliberate or not.

So....Cruz Sr was a resident of the US, right? Didn't he go from Cuba to Texas then Canada?

The harm to the right is a side effect that Trump doesn't care about. Trump cares about Trump and has shown time and again that he will say anything to keep his name in the papers.

Maybe not as a political candidate, but as a pundit, many do; in fact; Fox & Friends seems to love the guy.

Agree.

This. ^^^^

What if they come from Uranus?

People often meet me and say, "you look like you would vote for someone from Uranus," and I tell them that I would. On the other hand, I would never trust facts and assertions that come from Uranus.

I read yesterday that in the role of certifying its members, and certifying presidential results, congress has sole power to determine qualification and therefore has the power to ignore it. Just like there were congressmen under 25, congress could certify a non citizen as president and neither the court nor the sitting president could challenge it.

Do you have a citation for that assertion?

Are you thinking he might be part of a Democratic plot?

Diabolical.

It's a fact that Cruz was a US citizen at birth, as was John McCain and George Bush and Abraham Lincoln. The only reason this is even being discussed is that a lot of people would not accept the same fact about Obama.

No, the reason it is being discussed is that it is sweet karma for all of us who had to listen to that crap about Obama being a secret Kenyan.

Where is Cruz's natural born citizen form? WHERE? What is he hiding???!!!??

The "deliberate" part was facetious, mostly.

Although I have heard the conspiracy theory that John McCain decided after the 2000 primaries to do as much damage to the Republican party as possible and felt he could do more damage from the inside rather than switching parties.

I don't think he could stop talking about himself long enough to pull it off, personally.

That's just his showmanship, though. Whatever your opinions of Trump, he's a heck of a performer. Same reason Keith Olbermann keeps getting hired after all the times he's crashed and burned.

For an assertion of an untested constitutional provision? What would qualify? Outside of an obvious reading?

Well, there are the 3 senators that served under age.

The next point. If congress certifies the president, who decertifies?
