Republicans have choice between caving to Obama and shutting down Homeland Security

The Republican plan to overturn President Obama's executive actions on immigration was to attach legislation overturning those actions on a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security. To the surprise of no one with a brain, this plan failed. After passing in the House, the bill was filibustered in the Senate.

Republicans will blame Democrats for this situation and vice versa, but the fact of the matter is that after screaming about the supposed unconstitutionality of Obama's actions, Republicans are now faced with the choice of either allowing them to stand by passing a clean funding bill or shutting down Homeland Security.

As Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL), said, this is a “a self-inflicted political wound for Republicans."

They are going to point and say "see, Democrats don't want to protect our country" but people will see that the Republicans poisoned the bill with the immigration nonsense.

Wow, they sure are clever........

Adding unrelated riders to bills is old news in Washington and yes, both sides do it*. Sometimes it actually works out.

Republicans have simply taken it to an art form.

*required because that will be brought up by Republicans. Even though Democrats never used it to shut down the government or disable critical organizations.

Oh, they won the election, control both houses of Congress -and now they're just full of excuses and whining now that the shoe's on the other foot.

Please do let the DHS die. Their duties should be done by the FBI and Port Authority domestically, and by the CIA on foreign soil.

I long for the good old days when "the honorable gentleman from whyomma" would sneak in an article that delivered largesse to his brother-in-law by having the government buy a worthless non-productive mine and setting it aside as national parkland for retired nanny goats and whatnots.

And FEMA. They used to be pretty good. Not quite good enough not to make it into the prescient Deus Ex, maybe.

"We've had a week on it. We've had three cloture votes, all of which have not succeeded. It's clear we can't get on the bill. We can't offer amendments to the bill. I think it'd be pretty safe to say we're stuck, because of Democratic obstruction on the Senate side," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told reporters Tuesday.

Man, that "obstruction" thing's gotta suck.

Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), whose demands led to the standoff, said it's only failing because GOP leaders aren't fighting hard enough.

I wonder if conservative Republicans have begun to rue the day they got in bed with the Tea Party?
