That story kindly included a TMZ item about Lauten being arrested in 2000 on a charge of misdemeanor larceny, later dropped.

You could argue that Williams’ assaults, which make his behavior criminal but not national news, didn’t reflect on Landrieu. But given Lauten’s quick fall from grace, her Facebook post didn’t reflect on the GOP either.

If bad quotes alone make for good stories, then there should have been more reportage on Jonathan Gruber. He’s the MIT economist and Obamacare consultant caught on tape explaining how the Obama administration deliberately misled the public on the Affordable Care Act. The self-satisfied Gruber chalked up his success in fooling the public to “the stupidity of the American voter.” The Chronicle ran one piece on Gruber’s dust-up — mine.

I'm neither defending Lauten's actions (her post was stupid, but her decision to resign in the face of a media uproar was a good one), nor do I wish for the story to go away. It reinforces my belief in the hopelessly biased, librul media, so it is providing me with a very pleasant sensation of cognitive coherence right now.

You want to make this story go away? MAKE it a non-story.

How do you do that? By making it non-controversial. By making it obvious everyone, including republicans, agree that what she did was unacceptable. However, as long as there are those who are defending her (see this thread), it is going to be something to talk about. And as long as it is republicans defending her, it is going to be described in partisan terms.

The solution, if you want this to be a non-story, is to slap down the morons who are defending it. Tell THEM to stop turning this into a big deal, because all they are doing is feeding the media.

Turn it into a man bites dog story and the media won't bother.

Normally this form of code is used to quote and denigrate another speaker, not oneself.

Eye dialect is used in quotes as a literary form using spelling to indicate that the character's speech overall is dialectal, foreign, or uneducated...not the writer's. But what do I know?

The children of a standing political figure are off limits (morally) except in some, very uncommon, exceptions.

1. What they do is not overly problematic. Obviously if the child of a standing political figure does something highly illegal, treasonous, or otherwise notably grave expecting that to stay out of public discourse is probably unreasonable, but the subtle actions of two teenagers during a Turkey Pardoning hardly even begins to reach that level.

2. The political figure themselves have not constantly alluded or referenced their relationship with said relative as part of their... pitch to the American public. Had Obama during his campaign made how well behaved his daughters were a part of his platform, that would, obviously depending on the exact details of how everything was worded, at least open the door to higher levels of criticism.

The smart money is that Michelle Obama has indeed had those words with her daughters. Whether or not a couple of teens made a poor or awesome fashion choice for the event that Cleon rightly ridicules is not something to begin an outrage campaign over.
