Future of the Forum

Not exactly. Since I have my Admin powers back, I can search for people by their real name. As long as you know your name, I can set things to right.

This assumes that your Admin powers will carry over to the new board. Do you know this will happen?

It does help if your real name is more unusual than John Smith.

Or "Lisa Simpson"? :)

I assume so, but I don't know how the new software will work. But that is a question I shall ask icerat next time I chat with him

Yeah, Lisa Simpson is maiden name. Should be Lisa Van Houten now, I guess.

Sometimes I forget this board is mostly American. Someone's about to pull the trigger and I jump in front of the gun and the victim promptly sues me ....

Well, you did deprive him of a bitchin' scar he could use to pick up chicks, so of course you're liable!

Some of you have been talking about the Richard Dawkins forum. I am not an expert on this, but I did a little research.
The current forum is here: https://richarddawkins.net/discussionsarchive/
Apparently, it is no longer possible to create new threads, but members can still comment on existing threads.
If I understand correctly, there was another Dawkins forum, before this one, on RD.net, which was closed entirely in 2010, after some bandwidth (and server?) problems, which required turning off the search function of the site. When the closure annoucement was made, it was also announced the site would remain live for 30 days to allow users to retrieve anything they wanted to save (Source: http://jerome23.wordpress.com/2010/02/23/the-end-of-an-era-richard-dawkins-forum-to-close/). This could perhaps provide some (good or bad) inspiration for the JREF team.

Don't forget the magnificent moron JohnMekki.

His most recent sock, Kumar S,bit the dust a couple of weeks ago.
Amazing how the level of discourse on the Israeli/Palestinian and Mideat threads in general went up dramtically after this particualr sock was banned.

If you mean in regards to forum software which ever software package we go with will allow the same type of admin actions as we currently have. Some of them even have some of our "sooper sekret" tools built in.

So how about users who have been away for a while and don't know this is going on?

They will be emailed before any changes are made (that has already been established. - http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10156269&postcount=940 )

► If their current email (as installed in the forum) is still valid, they will have an opportunity to change it if they wish.

► If their current email (as installed in the forum) is NOT valid, well, the issue is moot anyway.

We were talking more about after the move in the case where all personal info (name, email, IP addresses, etc) have been purged and how people would be able to reclaim their accounts in cases where they didn't know their password and the email address on record was defunct.

I am strongly opposed to this. Lets see how far we can get with voluntary donations. If that cannot keep it afloat, I think nothing will.

I'm in for voluntary donation well above the annual amounts you mention. If it comes to pay-for-play, I'm out. Thats a ship that is doomed to oblivion in short order.

It would have been a suggestion for JREF to allow them to keep this forum and mold it to more closely resemble the brand they want. At this point, I think it's a moot point. Since the two are divorcing, then I doubt that brand is a large consideration for the eventual owners of the forum side. I was just too late to make that suggestion in time for it to do any good.

A voluntary donation approach is more likely to keep a larger population engaged and active. Which retains as much of the community as possible - and I assume this would be the goal of claiming ownership of the forum as a thing of its own separate from JREF.

There's no reason this would necessarily result in posters who share JREF's vision.

No, not necessarily, just more likely. It would also give JREF a bit more license to impose rules and mold the forum to reflect that vision. If people didn't like it, they can just return their prorata membership fees, and go their separate ways. It's much harder to do that when membership is free.

I keep seeing that term. What brand positioning is the Foundation looking for?

I dunno. Brand was mentioned way back in the beginning as one of the concerns of the organization, and the forum not reflecting where they want to go with their brand was given as justification for cutting us loose.

As for what they believe their brand to actually be... I haven't the foggiest. Presumably something to do with education and perhaps also skepticism... but I'm not taking any bets.
