New Malaysian airlines crash

The rebel leadership might have paranoias about commercial jets actually being spies. Instead of announcing that fear you just go shoot one down and announce that it was an AN-26. The result is that nobody flies in your sky which was what Igor wanted anyway.

Man, all I can say at this point is that.... this is depressing. Almost 300 people dead just in one shot, due to human stupidity :( . I wonder if humanity will ever grow up to adulthood.

I think the most depressing thought is that we already might be at adulthood and have been for thousands of years.

Russian rebel leader apparently bragged about shooting down the plane - probably before knowing it was commercial -

I would be careful about posting You tube videos, if it is one. If it's the same one I have seen the dorsal strake on the lower part of the fin is not of a Boeing 777. see clip below showing burning aircraft at 0:24. Posssibly a Boeing 737 series.

I don't know. If I were conscious and falling 10 km to my certain death, I might as well enjoy the thrill of terminal velocity while I'm at it, and the terrific view. :(

And naked, too, as your clothes probably got ripped off. "This is the least fun I've ever had with my clothes on or off!"

Here's an image of the basic system from Wiki:

And here's an image posted by the DNR (separatists) showing something they captured a few weeks back.

It's now been deleted and they're claiming they don't have the equipment to shoot down a 777. uhuh.

googlecache version

Also apparently now claiming the post I showed earlier was from a faked account. Problem is that it's a been used by the Colonel for months. They're scrambling

So why haven't they shot down a civilian airliner before if they are not making visual ID's? What has been preventing it? The air corridor above them has remained busy.

What made them decide that 9M-MRD was a military plane?

From what I can gather, the launcher was in the same area, not far away.

Heat of the moment. people get under stress and start to see things that aren't there. So...what is the typical track of a Commercial Jet Liner gets interpreted by the missile crew as the sinister bombing run of an enemy.

The United States made a similar mistake in the 1980's when the Navy panicked and blew an Iranian Airliner right out of the sky with a missile. The Navy came up with about 10,000 excuses...and all of them failed as the data poured in from radio and radar stations all about the Gulf and the events were pieced together.

This stuff is typical.

When the AN-26 was shot down, the clowns in Kiew blamed Russia because the "rebels" wouldn't have such weapons, according to them. The "rebels" said they shot it down with a BUK (they had since late June as icerat showed), you can go to the Ukraine thread where I posted about it after the ususal suspects routinely bought Kiew's story. Now the clowns in Kiew say the "rebels" shot the 777 down with a BUK. One thing is for sure, these guys have lied every day since February.

The Strelkov quote is not from an "official" outlet, btw. Could be made up or a repost of an earlier statement (talking about the An-26).

It's a screen shot from Vkontakte, a popular Russian social network. The account is used by a rebel leader and claims to have shot down a plane today.

The videos aren't the important part and are from today and also available on youtube - that one you posted has merged in footage from the military transport that was shot down a few days ago. Probably made by someone after hits.

Everyone will be looking for a response by Igor. Does he go and say it was a mistake?

It's my understanding that he deleted his initial tweet boasting of shooting down a "Ukrainian military plane" earlier today. I expect his likely response will be "I don't know what you're talking about".

IR655 was already mentioned upthread.

A bombing run from 10km up and coming from that direction?

Well, it's also possible the seperatists lied about "capturing" it and just got it from the Russians, which would make Kiev's comments true.

It was from Strelkov's account, now deleted. Here's a cached copy.
