Anthony of 'Opie and Anthony' Fired For Twitter Rant

You know. There is a bit there that may be a bit over the top. But I have no problem with referring to her as an animal, if she is acting like one.

If we take him completely at his word on this. Given his history (I'm long time listener of O&A back to their WNEW days), I'm not going to do that. He was taking creep shots and she objected. she shouldn't have hit him, but her anger is understandable.

Also, he didn't just say nasty things about her (again, not right but understandable) he went off about all black people.

The other thing is... people should get a bit of a pass right after they have been assaulted.

Again, he didn't just go off on her, he went off on all black people. and this rant has been going on for days now. And it is in line with stuff he's said for years.

No. I would say he got attacked because he was white.... Or at least she considered him a weaker target because he was white.

Or she caught him taking a creep shot of her. Maybe she isn't the kind of coward to hide on twitter when she has a problem with someone.

Non-racist doesn't mean "nicer",

It does, when racist insults hurt the most. Which is what I said in my conditional.

his words on Twitter weren't directed at his assailant in the heat of the moment. I have no idea what he actually said to the woman he says attacked him; but somehow I really doubt that he used the same racist language that he employed on Twitter toward her directly, or toward the other black "savages" he claimed came to support her. Guys like him tend to wait until they're safely surrounded by other white people before letting the racism fly.

Well I don't know either what really happened, and I only objected to the part of your post I directly quoted, which by your own admission it seems, might not have anything to do with this incident.

There is nothing inherently wrong about "going off" on black people. Just like there is nothing inherently wrong with going off on white people..... Or Muslims... or Jews.... or men.... or woman... or fat people... or lawyers... or politicians.

I can go off on any group... and do. Sometimes a person can be wrong or stretch it to far.... sometimes they are right on the money.

I think Anthony was wrong with a lot of what he said. But if he's making a larger point about certain aspects he observes in black culture..... I have no problem with that.

That is also a real possibility. You could be exactly right.... Sounds like something a greasy Italian would do.

None of that proves racism. Even if he is wrong.

He has a problem with certain aspects of black culture..... Just like Bill Cosby.

To me it's and angry rant about the worst parts of black culture and a guy pissed off about it.

That is much, much different then racism.

One of the problems with this forum is that the dumbest comments attract the most attention, probably because they're easier to pick apart. With that out of the way, arguing Cumia's comments are not racist is probably more idiotic than arguing he's justifiably racist.

So, black people are lawless savages? I'm just curious what parts exactly he was right about.

And I'm betting that you aren't a highly compensated face for a large company.

Tell me how they are racist please.

No. Sounds like she may have been a lawless savage.
That phrase is meaningless except as a way to describe a person or group (and it was pretty clearly about the latter) in a pejorative fashion. There's all kinds of law in New York City. People can avail themselves of its protection by using their neat smartphone to call 9-1-1 instead of logging on to Twitter and whining like a little racist bitch.

"This is 9-1-1, what's your emergency?"
"A woman just punched me."
"Where are you?"
"<insert address here>"
"Police are being dispatched to your location right now."

That's what a reasonable person concerned about lawbreakers (especially violent ones) does. If a person doesn't, then any complaints about "lawlessness" are not only pointless but may even be flat-out hypocrisy ("I want to live in a lawful society but I won't do anything to make it so."). Expecting police officers to see every crime as it's committed is dumb.

I think that "going off" any any group is simply wrong, because it assumes that all members of that group share a (often negative) trait. That has not been my experience, people differ a lot, and lumping everyone together on the basis of some larger group due to their skin color, gender, etc. is indeed racism, sexism, etc. It assumes that belonging to this type of group means all members exhibits a particular trait, often negative (but not necessarily), that is not the basis of the grouping itself. So yes, you might say that "Blacks" tend to have dark skin (although there appears to be quite a range here) but it is clearly racism to say Blacks tend to be cheap (here I intentionally lifted a stereotype that other ethnic groups have been accused of, but one not typically used for Blacks). In fact, what exactly is "black culture?"

Even more, I do have a problem with Anthony, or anyone else, saying these sort of racist things: it proves that they are a jerk! As I mentioned before in this thread, if they are an automobile welder, this probably will not affect the ability to do their job (especially if they avoid insulting their coworkers at the job). But Anthony's job skill is to attract listeners; if he is going to damage that skill, I have no trouble with his employer also terminating him.

No. Sounds like she may have been a lawless savage.

Was this the problem? Or was he directly or indirectly accusing a much larger group of being lawless savages based on skin color? In particular, using preexisting stereotypes to describe any member of a particular group is, in practice, risky. In this case, calling her a "jerk" would have avoided any possible misunderstanding. But it wasn't a misunderstanding, given his tweets, was it? Anthony really was racist, wasn't he?

In the news: someone hired to be a jerk crosses the line and is an even bigger jerk than their employer wanted. They are fired.

Even fans of the show report that he says racist things on the show - racist enough that guests have argued with him about it. Given that context, the meaning of his twirade (phrase coined!) becomes quite clear.

Oh, come on, Pollyanna. What are the odds that an NYPD officer would take a white guy's side?

I'd think it's weird that several people who are listeners to O&A's show have been very critical of his comments too, but I'm posting this while listening to Tyler, the Creator who is very much a provocateur and admittedly uses slurs because they'll offend his target without regard for those that are the usual target of them.

I can't stand listening to some of his songs most of the time (Blow, Transylvania, Tron Cat, Pigs, Fish) but he also has some really great stuff.
